Can someone explain union jobs to me?

Two people I know (one a friend, the other a family member) were both suspended from their jobs working for NYS / NYC, respectively.

Basically, they were accused of of gross misconduct and we caught using surveillance video. Both of these people are on suspension of their jobs, still with full pay and benefits and have told by their union that they will "find a position" for them within the scope of their industry.


Does anyone find this Is this how unions operate?

I'm not in one, but am friendly with people who are, and from what I understand, this is one of the major benefits of being a unionized employee.......you have a lot of job protection and security.


I also think there are many professions where it's wonderful that something like this exists, especially with people that could so easily try to throw you under the bus (i.e. teaching, human services, nursing, police, etc.)


I know this is not the point of your thread, but I hope to find a job like this one day!
