OK finally going to start the Couch to 5 K
Been wanting to do this forever and never manned up! After reading Palebride's post (THANK YOU), I think I am ready! Now I am completely the opposite of a runner. Have never done it in my life. Here are my really dumb questions:
-How do you carry your ipod?
-Do you bring water with you and if so again, how do you carry it?
Thanks, wish me luck I think I will need it!

Re: OK finally going to start the Couch to 5 K
I'm not sure if this is true, but a friend told me that you shouldn't really need water unless you're going 4+ miles.
I resisted that idea and bought a belt to hold two small plastic squeeze bottles and a pouch for my phone & keys.
I used it once.
Now I use an armband that hubby bought me from D*cks sporting goods that holds my HTC Thunderbolt, which is bigger than the iPhone.
Good luck and I hope you like it as much as I do!

I don't bring water, just have a very big glass when I get home. I usually don't feel the need to drink during the runs. I always just carry my iphone in my hand. Until the longer runs started, I wanted to be looking at it pretty much constantly.

I do it on the treadmill, so I'm spoiled and I have water, my iphone, and a towel with me. Once I start running outside....I don't know what I'm going to do!

I always wondered the same things before I ran. Now, I also have an armband for my ipod and I don't bring water (and I'm running 4+ miles usually). I'm fine without the water I just focus on breathing and then drink a ton when I finish my run.

Re: OK finally going to start the Couch to 5 K
I'm on week 6 of couch to 5K, and I was SO not in shape and had never run in my life. I've been liking it.
I've been running outside on a track, and I started in July, but I haven't had to carry water with me. It's only a 25-30 minute workout, and a lot of it is walking intervals to start. I just bring water in my car and drink it when I am done. My runner friend who does marathons said you don't need water breaks at a 5K distance.
As far as running with an ipod.. I haven't been doing it yet. I did it the old fashioned way. I bought a stopwatch I would wear around my neck, and just timed the intervals. It wasn't too boring because I was always switching back and forth, and I just enjoyed the experience of running outside.
Now, the runs are getting longer -- I just did the 20 minute run (which I never thought I could do, but I did it!) -- so I am going to buy an armband to hold my ipod. But you should keep your hands relaxed when running, so you don't want to be holding anything (water, ipod), imo.
Good luck! Trust me, if I can do it, anyone can!

Re: OK finally going to start the Couch to 5 K
Come to think of it, the only time in recent memory I can think of that I was seriously parched while running, I was dehydrated as well. I didn't realize till I got home.
On weekends, I like to cool off after a run on my back patio, with a big cup of water. Or lately, with a homemade smoothie.

I bought an armband for my iPOD. I did the program in the spring/summer. I was in no way a runner. It works.
I would suggest downloading the podcasts from runningintoshape.com
They are free. They are already pre-made with music (decent) and pre-timed. A woman comes on and tells you when to walk or run. It has a pre-made podcast for every week.
It cut out excuses for me to find new music, start 2 apps on my phone, and pretty much anything else I could have come up with the procrastinate starting,

I wear an iFitness belt to hold my phone/music & also my inhaler. I have the double one because of the inhaler. http://www.ifitnessinc.com/
I don't carry water with me. I usually just drink a lot before & after since it's a short run/workout.

Re: OK finally going to start the Couch to 5 K
Thanks everyone! I started today and felt great afterwards! I didn't bring water and didn't really need it but I did drink a lot afterwards. I stuck my phone in my waiste band of my pants lol. I'll need to look into options for that! Thanks for the ideas.

I usually drink before and after my runs, so I won't bring water. I do bring water when I run 4+ miles though. I either run on thr treadmill so it's easy to store water and when I run outside, I run at a park so I pass the same scenery, so I usually leave water on my path.

Many running pants/shorts have zippered pockets in the waistband or on the butt to store phone/keys. This is what I use when I run outside.
