HOW do you run?

OK I realize this sounds dumb but I started Couch 2 5K (never ran a day in my life) today and loved it but my ankle is bothering me a bit and I am afraid of shin splints. So what do I need to know in order to avoid injury? I'm assuming a good pair of running shoes. What else? TIA! I really want to conquer this!

HOW do you run?

Definitely get fitted for the right running shoes.
Run however it feels natural for you- if you try and change your natural gait you risk injury.
Warm up before and stretch after.
And of course, take days off!

Exactly what Colleen said! If you have the right running shoes and you are increasing mileage gradually, chances of injury are slim.

I go slow, and also I try not to minimize the up and down motion... I read that you shouldn't lift your foot off the ground that high, it should just be an easy, fluid stride.

Also, I read that if you kneel and then sit back on your butt, you can stretch out your shins that way and it can cut down on the chance of shin splints.

shoulders back, head straight, slight forward lean, mid-foot strike.... I think with this form you have the least chance of injury.

I used to run with a heel strike on a straight leg & without the slight lean forward & I would get a lot of back & knee pain, including sciatica.

Yup, that's how I learned and haven't had a problem, even when I was 70 pounds heavier than I am now.

From what I've read, shin splints can be made worse by improper shoes, unforgiving terrain and when doing sprints, because it's the muscles along the front of your lower legs that get used. There are exercises you can do to strengthen those muscles, you can google them.

I also try to make sure that my stride isn't more than say one or two feet in front of my body. That way, I'm not landing on my heel.

It's enlightening to be tuned into your body when you're doing these things, every movement of your muscles, legs, arms, making sure you don't tense up your shoulders and neck... It can be a lot to think about. You get used to it though.

One last thing... There's no shame in staying at a particular level on the C25K for more than they recommend, if you need more time to get used to it. Take your time so you do it right and avoid injury. Chat Icon

Tight calves can cause shin splints so make sure to stretch them out!
