Western Suffolk towns with great school districts...
Just beginning our search for a home ... I want Nassau but DH wants Suffolk (wants more land and less taxes) so before the talks of moving out of state comes up again..I will definitely agree to Suffolk if that helps me stay in NY
But I am from queens and I know more about Nassau ...
Need help with Suffolk ...
Most of our families are in Queens and Nassau ... So the more western Suffolk the better!
I have friends in Dix Hills /(commack schools ) and they have nothing BUT good things to say about it! So I am starting there...but would like other areas to look and compare as well...
I would like to be close to highways..for commuting west (DH's work and visiting family)
Right now I love my home but not Ina great school district..so that is really my top priority! (and larger land and taxes under 10k comes in a close second )
Thanks for any help!

Most schools are good in Suffolk but it totally depends on your price range.
And you'll be surprised on how taxes in suffolk are just as bad, but you get more land.
Commack and smith town are both excellent sd s but it will be difficult to stay under 10k in taxes

Re: Western Suffolk towns with great school districts...
When we looked, we looked in Lindenhurst, West Babylon, West Islip, East Islip.
We ended up buying a large 4 br house on a nice size lot in Islip Terrace/E Islip schools. (search East Islip schools b/c parts of Islip Terrace are in Central Islip which isnt good) Taxes are $10K before STAR though.
All are close to sunrise and SS.
Good luck!

Northport's taxes (Npt-ENpt SD) are lower on average for same size property than comparable surrounding districts due to LIPA being in Northport. It comprises Northport and areas of East Northport (North of Clay Pitts)
There are some areas of East Northport that attend Commack and Elwood (both higher taxes).

Commack, Harborfields, and Half Hollow Hills are all great. If you prefer the south shore, Bay Shore, Islip, East Islip, and West Islip are also well rated.
That said, there are very few really bad districts on LI.

Half Hollow Hills. It really is the best one IMO in Western Suffolk.

Re: Western Suffolk towns with great school districts...
We live in Amity Harbor which is in the Copiague SD.
We are below Montauk Highway, which will always be a desirable location IMO. Several real estate agents I have spoken to recently also told me the same.
There is also Lindenhurst and Babylon.
I like where we live because we are basically one town East of Nassau and therefore, do most of my stuff in Nassau.
I also love the little shopping center in West Babylon and am there almost daily.
I work in Babylon Village which is also lovely, but I know taxes are higher along with home cost..
DS is not in school yet, but you may get mixed opinions about the Copiague SD district because of the diversity.
All of our neighbors have not had issues though, and a lot of their kids are second generation to the school.
I have heard one complaint about the HS, and that was just that there is a lot of riff raff from surrounding districts that comes in and starts problems.
I take it with a grain of salt though, especially since DS is not even in school yet, and you have issues everywhere these days.
We pay under $10K and have a huge back yard.
Amityville shares a zipcode with us. Personally, while I love all the big old houses in Amityville, unless I was planning to send my child to private school, I would think the SD a little too rough. JMO.

Cold Spring Harbor, Northport, Dix Hills, Harborfields, Kings Park, Commak, Smithtown....etc. are all great.... It would be easier to tell you which to stay away from because most districts are really good!

This is a great list! I would add Hauppauge and maybe Elwood. These are all great SDs and towns that surround each other so the whole area is pretty nice.

We were thinking of moving to smithtown last year and every house we looked at was on .25 acres (a downsize for us) and was $10K in taxes!
Are you in Hauppauge SD?

I think Bay Shore is one of the best SDs. I student taught there years ago and I was amazed at what high standards the kids were held to and I LOVED the diversity. This is a SD that has millionaires and people on welfare in the same town. With that being said, there are definitely some bad areas of Bay Shore, so you need to know where to look.
I went to Islip and I think it's a lot of smoke and mirrors. I felt like I wasn't held to any type of standards and I was in all honors classes and the gifted program. It may have improved; I graduated 10 years ago.
I live in W. Babylon now with N. Babylon schools. DH went to N. Babylon - it's a good school. W. Islip, E. Islip, & W. Babylon are also good.

Re: Western Suffolk towns with great school districts...
Harborfields is great. Small district. My daughter's 11th grade class has only 225 kids. Our taxes without the STAR exemption are just under $11,000. Your nestled between Huntington and Northport a great location.

I second West Islip also! Great schools, close to the beach (huge plus for me) taxes are not bad! I'm off Montauk hwy also (north side)!
