What i just did...........I had to.
I work in a store front. busy st.
Car pulls right in front to park (bagel place is on block). I see a little thing in front of this truck. All i saw was little curls..... I laugh and say " i hope thats a dog."
It wasnt. Guy comes out and goes to passenger side to unbuckle a little girl probably a yr old. 
He walks away and Im shaken by that and tell my coworkers how dangerous that is, why isnt there a carseat?? Its illegal. etc.
I said if he comes back and tries to do it again, Im saying something.
Sure enough he opens the passenger side door.
I couldnt help it, I walked out, said Sir..i dont mean to do this but can you PLEASE at least put her in the back seat and buckle her up. He (was grandpa) says, shes small and squirms and my daughter forgot her carseat.
I proceeded to tell him ok but NOT IN THE FRONT! shes little, the airbag can go off and hurt her- i have two small boys and I would never place them in the front.
He said ok, and put her in the back.
I said, Thank you and have a good day.
He was ok about it, and although it still wasnt safe....I felt better she was out of front seat.
ETA: I work for insurance, (my storefront says it) so I dont know if that is why he took it well, being that I KNOW what happens daily when ppl are behind the wheel.
I came in shaking from how uneasy and nervous I felt.
It def took a lot for me to go out there.

Yikes! I wonder if his daughter knew that's how he was driving around with her.
At least he moved her to the back. I know many Grandparents who would have given you a hard time for telling them what to do. Some are just so stubborn! I hate the whole "We did it with you and you turned out ok" mentality.
I hope that bagel was worth the risk.

Exactly...he wasn't rushing her to the emergency room. It was for a BAGEL. Ugh.

I'm so glad you said something. Like others have said, a bagel is no reason to take a child out without a carseat. It's extremely unnerving that people do this. I wonder if his daughter knew that he took the girl out.

Good for you for saying something. I don't get people. I'd flip my sh!t if my parents put my kid in the car without a car seat.
No defense, but it's probably because when we were babies, they put us in our mommy's lap in the front seat to carry us home from the hospital when we were born. I think that generation just doesn't get how dangerous that was.

Not to defend him but it's probably bc in his time as a parent that was acceptable. He probably doesn't think of it as we do (ie completely insane).
We were driving my inlaws home from a party once when ds1 was an infant and he started wailing. My fil thought it was a perfectly acceptable suggestion that he take him out of the seat and hold him.  but I know my fil is  for my kids and just doesn't know better.

I called the police on a car just the other day...I was stopped at a light and I see this car with a little boy about 1year-18 months walking around in the car. They were in an SUV the kid was walking through the console to the passenger side and back and forth. I didn't see a car seat either so I called 911. I wish I had gotten a license plate but then they turned into the busy intersection. It made me sick!

Ugggh I hate that he was driving her around like that but maybe now she's a bit safer; you were GREAT to say something about it (and I'm sure he received it well because you are charming and nice).
Also not to defend him like an earlier poster said, but on top of what was done a generation or two ago when we were little - I think there are a TREMENDOUS number of people who just do not get the risk associated with airbags. It's mind-blowing to me, but a lot of people have never heard of this issue. I have an elderly aunt who's on the frail side - we won't let her ride in the front passenger seat either.
I'll forgive the grandad but I want to slap that kid's mom upside the head

What i just did...........I had to.
i would have called the police. not to get anyone in trouble, but even the backseat with no carseat is extremely dangerous. who knows where he was going with her for the rest of the day. teachers are required to report child abuse/neglect when they notice it. EVERYONE should be required!
