Anyone know what happened here? Sounds like a family dispute but the whole "suspect in the homicide of another child" part is pretty scary.

AMBER ALERT! OMG, everyone keep an eye out!!!
I just saw on Ch7 that there was a 3 year old who hasn't been seen in about a year, just about the time the family moved into their house. It sounds like a lot to be coming out.

Thank goodness, the child was found safe.
The 9 year old was found but the police have been there all night searching the property for a 3 year old missing toddler.
This is crazy.

Unbelievable. Beating and burying your child in your backyard. I'm disgusted. It's so terribly sad for that poor baby. There's so much more to the story too. But glad that Mom finally fessed up to the SP. Her other two kids should be taken away from her for good and she and her husband- put away for life.

I read the article twice. At NO time does it say any child was beaten. If you have other information, please share instead of making this blanket statement. Jumping to conclusions can only lead to bad things.

Didn't mean to make a general statement. Yes, an officer at the scene told me that the husband is being questiond for allegedly beating the baby to death (a couple of years ago) and then burying the baby in the yard.

Thank goodness, the child was found safe.
News 12 reported that the body was that of the child when he was 18 months old, and he would be three now. How incredibly sad that no-one in this extended family or friends appeared to even know this child was gone all this time. What did these sick parents tell their family all this time? It seems that it was only discovered after DSS stepped in for another matter. That poor child.

Re: Thank goodness, the child was found safe.
omg how horrible did this story become Authorities have found the remains of a toddler in the backyard of a Hallock Street home in Farmingdale and are investigating the boyfriend of the child's mother, State Police said Saturday. A body, believed to be that of 17-month-old Justin Kowalczik, was discovered by police in a 3-foot grave along the property line of a home shared by Robert Rodriguez and Heather Kowalczik, the boy's mother, said Maj. Patrick Regan, commander of Troop L in Farmingdale. "It is absolutely a suspicious death and it's being investigated as such," Regan said. The child had been buried in the yard since July 2010, shortly after the family moved to Long Island from upstate Orange County, Regan said. Police said Heather Kowalczik alerted police to the location of the boy's body during the investigation. No missing-person report was ever made. The couple are not married but have two children, 9-year-old Alex and 6-year-old Robert Jr., both of whom are now under the watch of Suffolk County Child Protective Services. Rodriguez, who works at PC Richard & Son in Greenvale, is not Justin's father. "Certainly we believe they have information that could lead us to exactly how this occurred and how we arrived at locating this child," Regan said. Police have not made an arrest in the case although authorities have identified Rodriguez, 30, as a person of interest in the case. Rodriguez is not cooperating with police, Regan said. "He's certainly someone we feel can provide us with more information about this case than we have," Regan said. "To this point he has not spoken to us." The medical examiner's office is conducting an investigation into the cause of the child's death. Rodriguez's attorney, Byron Divins of Garden City, said his client is on Long Island but is not in police custody. Divins declined to comment on the discovery of Justin's remains. "We're investigating," he said. "I know the police are investigating. We'll see where the investigation takes us." Louie Lancie, the family's Farmingdale landlord, said he does not recall ever seeing a toddler around the house. "It's the most disgusting thing in the world," a distraught Lancie said Saturday. He said the family was generally quiet and was not the source of any complaints. Neighbors Jimmy and Michele Peavey said Saturday morning that they were close friends with the family and would frequently allow their grandchildren to play with the couple's children. But they never heard them mention a third child. "Heather just had a birthday party for [9-year-old] Robbie in the backyard in August," Michele Peavey said. "You mean we were back there with a body?" Jimmy and Michele Peavey said Heather often appeared depressed and anxious and that Robert was unpleasant and rarely at the home. Michele said Heather "was very scared of him." "He would come out and examine the grass," Jimmy Peavey said. The Peaveys said Heather came to their home Friday morning about 9 a.m. crying. "She wanted to tell us something, but she didn't know how to do it," he said. Michele's adult daughter, Takiera McCormack, said she spent every day last summer with Heather. "I can't see this," McCormack said. "This is crazy. She was a good mother. Those kids loved her. Every time you saw her you saw the kids." The investigation into the child's disappearance began Wednesday when Suffolk County Child Protective Services went to the home to check on the health of the couple's 6-year-old child, Regan said. Neighbors said the child is autistic and was recently hospitalized. During the visit, Child Protective Services could not locate Justin, and the mother told police the child was in Orange County with family members. State Police on Long Island later opened a local missing person's case, Regan said. In an interview, Heather Kowalczik told detectives that Justin was not alive and was buried in the backyard. After learning that he was a person of interest in Justin's death, police said Rodriguez fled on Friday with his oldest son, Robert Jr. When the boy did not arrive at school, an Amber Alert was issued. The boy was later found unharmed and the father has not been charged in the case. Divins said his client was not attempting to flee. A man who identified himself as a "friend of the [Kowalczik] family" when he answered the phone at a Pine Island residence in Orange County told Newsday early Saturday afternoon that they weren't accepting phone calls.
