...and used to work in the office, did you take a pay cut to do so? Did you give up any vacation time or benefits?

I have friends who have, and no - no pay cuts and no giving up benefits or vacation time.

I have the option to work from home if I want, and it has not affected my salary/benefits.

Do you mean telecommuting from a regular position, or becoming self-employed? I have a friend who telecommutes and gets all the same benefits, salary, etc. She does have to travel periodically to her office which is out of state.

I wonder if that kind of arrangement lowers the overhead for employers. And freelancers are becoming more attractive to employers because they don't have to pay benefits. I freelance, but I get insurance through my husband's job.

I think it depends on the company policy. If you are a full-time employee and are just asking to telecommute, then you shouldn't have to take a pay cut or reduction in benefits because you are supposed to be doing the same job/amount of work.

Some companies encourage it. I think larger companies are often more open to flexible work arrangements, as are certain industries (where face-to-face contact is not as essential). It can save the employer money by reducing the need for office space. Even if there is a need to be in the office some days, you can have 2 employees share the same desk/work station and alternate days in the office or split the week (and work from home the other days). With all of the technology we have these days, it's easy.

When I practiced law, I did work out an arrangement where I could work from home 2 days a week. I did this after I came back from maternity leave after having my son. I did take a pay cut, but it was because I told my law firm I only wanted to bill 75% of the billing requirement, so I got 75% of my former salary. But since I couldn't do 75% of my full time job in 3 days a week in the office, it was understood I would work from home at least part of the 2 days I was out of the office. If I committed to billing 100% of the hours I did before while working from home, I would have retained my former salary. I retained full benefits, though.

Now, I am basically an independent agent, not an employee, of my real estate firm. So I work from home all the time, but it's not a salaried position (it's all commission-based), so it's a non-issue.

As another poster mentioned, it depends whether you mean working from home for a company or working from home for yourself.

I work at home part-time for myself and out of the house part-time. Since I'm self employed, I have no benefits, insurance, etc. I have insurance through DH.

We do this where I work. I am usually never in on Friday's so someone uses my desk. They use someone else's desk while that person is not in on Wednesdays. We are going to be taking on more space at work shortly, but for now this works.

I don't do well with getting much done from home, but I have been encouraged to work out of the office in general in the past.........especially if you've seen my posts. Several of my co-workers thrive on drama, and because I basically just "share" their space and don't have the same responsibilities, this has created A LOT of tension.

I consider the ability to be able to work out of the office a major perk overall, but I would have issues with it if my pay or benefits were cut.

I try and find jobs online to work from home. I just dont know which are scams. Im a divorced mom of 2 kids. And have been looking for a while. Its not easy finding a job when I havent worked in 10 years. I was a stay at home mom. I used to watch people kids for extra money.
