Strawberry Hemangioma on Face
Hu ladies- if your baby had a hemangioma on thier face- can you tell me when it started to go away? do you have any pics?
I am just curious.
Reagan has one on her eyebrow which all doctors have told me to leave alone- so i am curious what the progression looks like.
Thanks!

My DD has one and it just gets bigger as she gets bigger. Dr told me it should fade by 1 yo.

Re: Strawberry Hemangioma on Face
My dd didn't have it on her face but on her shoulder it was fairly large. She is 26 months and it's looks like a doughnut now. The center is almost all gone and it's gotten much smaller.

This exactly for my DS. His showed up exactly at 2 weeks on his forehead. Got bigger up until a year, but by then his hair started to cover it. Now at 3.5 you forget it's there. It's not red anymore and hardly raised. Just a little soft and more of his skin color. Maybe a drop pink, but it really faded. His hair covers it and I've trained his bangs to go over it.
I figured when he is of age and if it's something that bothers him then I'd do something about it. I have a feeling it'll hardly be noticeable though.
Eta... Pics are in my album of him.

Strawberry Hemangioma on Face
DD developed one right on the bottom portion of her nostril. Ped Derm said it would fade, and it did by 1 yr. it's totally gone.

Re: Strawberry Hemangioma on Face
I had one on my arm as a baby, fully went away by third grade.
Btw...my mom said that people used to come up to her all the time and go "omg what happened to your baby!?" My mom hated it! People are so rude! Does this happen to any of you?

Re: Strawberry Hemangioma on Face
DD has a deep hemangioma (so its not red, more blue colored) on her eyelid - and yes people asked me all the time "whats wrong with her eye" - we used propanolol to shrink it bc it was interfering with her vision.
however, I was told without medicine that they normally stop growing by 12 months and then would shrink on its own by age 4-5 so hang in there!

Re: Strawberry Hemangioma on Face
It took about a year to go away, but it was small to begin with. The one on the back of her neck she still has, she's 4

Strawberry Hemangioma on Face
My DD has one on her lower lip. As an infant it was a slight red line and then grew over two months to be about the size of a dime and bright blood red. We were to told to be agressive with treatment so did two laser therapies and have had her on propanolol since she was three months old...she is now 22 months. The hemangioma has responded great, has not grown and is much flatter. It's definitely still there but not as noticeable. Our pediatric dermatologist says it can take 5-10 years for them to completely disappear and can grow up to two years old. Signs that it's on the way is a deeper red color, and white spots...when you see that you know it's healing.
Good luck! I live in Atlanta so deal with Emory Ped Derm, but I do have the name of the top Ped Derm in NYC who deals with these if you are ever interested.

Re: Strawberry Hemangioma on Face
DD had one on her head, and now at 4 it is completely flat, but the color is still there- hard to tell when it faded as it was covered by hair...
DS has one on his head, one on his face, and one on his back. He is now 2.5. The one on his back is now pretty much gone- the one on his face has gotten smaller, but is still pretty prominent.. hopefully that one will go away soon... i hate when kids stare at him weird because of it...

Re: Strawberry Hemangioma on Face
My DD had 3 small ones. One was on her neck, size of a pea. One was on her chest, size of a pencil point (two of them side by side) and one was in her diaper area. Ugh.
The ones on the neck and chest were gone by 18 mths, only got as large as a pea. The one in her diaper area got as large as a pea but sadly is not gone now at 4. I think it may be lightening or getting smaller but not fast enough...it's a PIA where it is. And it may not be changing at all, hard to say just yet. I wish it would go away already at 4.

Re: Strawberry Hemangioma on Face
One of my friends DDs was born with a large one on her face. She has had several procedures and it had faded a lot. She will be 1 in December.

Re: Strawberry Hemangioma on Face
My daughter had one in the helix of her ear. It started growing at 2 months of age. I took her to an ENT, and they told me to go to a Dermotologist. I went to see a Vascular surgeon instead, since it has to do with blood vessels. My daughter didn't have the strawberry kind. Hers was the blue and purple color, where it bulged out and looked like the littlest scratch could cut it open. A lot of research and doctors say the majority growth period for a hemangioma is 6-9 months. Some will go away and start to fade, some won't. My daughter was put on medication for 6 weeks to help shrink it by the Vascular Surgeon. (we put her on it, under the care of a hematologist and her pediatrician- the key is to go on it at the right time.) Once she came off the medication, it still grew but not as much as it would've if she didn't take the medicine. Surgery to remove it was optional, but we decided to do it. Her pediatrician suggested to have it done by 18 months, so she won't remember it. We were originally on the fence about surgery, but figured when she was older she may get self conscious about it (especially since kids and even adults could be cruel at times). She had the surgery the beginning of September and it looks great. Sorry so long.... FM me if you have any questions. I did a lot of research and went for different opinions before I went this route and I'm glad we made the choice that we made.

I went out a few days ago with DS (4.5) and a bunch of other people. Another mom brought her DD (1 year) who had one. I looked at it and looked away (as not to stare not be rude). DS looked at it and said, "what's wrong with her face?". I said she had a boo boo and he accepted it. A few older/other woman asked the mom about it and I thought it was rude. They made it seem like the mom didn't know it was there by asking.
