Test Results are in

So my OB called to tell me that the recent miscarriage occurred as the baby had trisomy 16 and thats basically incompatible with lifeChat Icon I dont know why but I had hoped they would find that it was not chromosonal. He was convinced it was age related - I am 41 and have three miscarriages in the past 16 months.....

So where do I go from here?

I still want a third child but at my age realistically should I consider that three strikes I am out?

I honestly don't know know where I am going to go from here....

Thanks for listening.Chat Icon

I'm so sorry Chat Icon
I wouldn't give up on that 3rd child - you seem to really want one. Have you considered a fertility specialist?

A reproductive endocrinologist would test you and your DH to see if you carry genetic markers for chromosomal abnormalities. Your other options would be to do an IVF cycle and have the embryos tested (thousands of dollars not covered by insurance) to put back the ones that are chromosomally normal.

There are options but (as you can see) they're involved.

Re: Test Results are in

Thank you Chat Icon During my last pregnancy I came back with a 1 in 5 chance of having a baby with DS so they sent me for a CVS and before I had that they did a full work up on DH and I and nothing unusual came back. As it turned out my baby did not have DS nor did it have any other chromosome problem but I did miscarry after having the CVS at 14 weeks.

They did not test for my first miscarriage as it was my first.

So really all I have to go on is this last test and the results!

So I know we can get pregnant. I know I can carry a pregnancy as I have two kids already. I know we dont have any chromosome abnormalities together - I think its called something like mosiac if we have etc. I know I am 41 and I have only started miscarrying since I turned 39.I know I am healthy otherwise. SO in my mind all roads lead to my rusty eggsChat Icon

Re: Test Results are in

I had researched common causes of miscarriages and trisomy 16 is the MOST common reason.

I would not give up on another baby..you seem to want one very much. If you can emotionally handle it, try again...if it happens (god forbid) again maybe talk to a specialist. the fact that you have two healthy kids is a great sign, miscarriage is often just rotten luck. It's amazing how many women have had them...since opening up about my ectopic, i swear every woman i've met either has had one, suspected they had one, or has a family member who had one.

Keep your head up and try to think positive thoughts. Praying for you!! Chat Icon

Yup, this is an option. If you're interested, you should find out what your infertility benefits are. I know it's a lot to wrap your head around, but what you COULD do to check the genetic status of your embryos is do IVF (if you have coverage, the $$ won't be bad) and then do PGD on them which is basically a biopsy that checks for genetic abnormalities. It's a few thousand dollars.

We did this and were told that in a 20yr old egg donor, typically HALF come back normal.... so they said to expect no better than that (I was 26 at the time of retrieval). Well, I still had my hopes up that most of mine would come back normal. Nope! Of 8 tested, 4 were normal... which is still a good number, but just surprising to me.

Since you've had multiple losses, this may not be a bad option to at least just investigate. A little information never hurt anyone!

Re: Test Results are in

ThanksChat Icon If I am to be brutally honest with myself I actually think I am in denial about all this. I mean I have two kids - first pregnancy I was 6 weeks pregnant before I knew I was pregnant -happened like that...second one we used OPK's and got pregnant first time ..then it was all downhill from there and now I can see IVF looming and visiting specialists and I still feel like this will happen naturally but chances are it may not....

The way I am feeling today I feel like I am reaching the end of the road and its time to throw in the towel.

Thanks everyoneChat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Test Results are in

I am staring down IVF or at least I feel like I am. I am 40, 2 miscarriages in this year (no live babies) and a couple years into the trying thing, including fertility docs. We have done IUI a couple times and "regulated trying" with drugs. I am on day 26 feeling like I may be pregnant but also wondering if it is just me thinking too much about it and feeling every twinge in my body and attributing it to that. If I don't end up pregnant, I think we will try IUI one more time. If we head to IVF, my heart says to use donor eggs. I am sure that it will still be a tough choice to let go of using my own eggs, but at this point I think my end game is to be pregnant and birth our child/children. I still feel like the baby would implant in my body and interact and be nourished from my body so still mine even though the genetics wouldn't be.

Not sure about the cost of testing the embryos, but using donor eggs seems to come with a $5k cost. The miscarry rates go way down with donor eggs as they use young donor females.

I know this is still the IVF/high cost route but wanted to make sure you considered it.
