NYC teachers and RTI
Can anyone share how your school handles it? Is there a specific time of day set aside for RTI? Are there out of classroom teachers who help classroom teachers with RTI (not talking about for kids with IEPs).
Was just put on the RTI "team" in my building and I am wondering how behind other schools we are with this.

In our school there is no RTI team. Each teacher is responsible for RTI with her own students. No extra time is given. What does an RTI team do?

We use treasures and my math, which both have RTI resources that I print and distribute as needed on an individual basis.

I don't know...my principal set up a team...a few people went to a PD provided by the city, hmmm, maybe it was by our network, I'm not sure. they were told that RTI needs to be done more formally and not during regular instructional time. And teachers need to try 6 to 8 weeks of some RTI strategy before referring any child for evaluation. I was hoping someone out there would have some clue what it was all about!!!

We had a school wide RTI time for 30 minutes twice a week at the end of the day. One day was math on was language arts. All non-classroom teachers (PE, music, art, ESl, etc) were assigned a grade level to work with, that way each grade level can divide the kids in to groups based on needs. The kids who didn't need intervention either completed unfinished work, buddy read, played math games, etc. while the others received intervention. It worked great, but the time wasn't great for primary grades because they were checked out by the end of the day. Unfortunately or principal who started it left, so now we aren't doing anything....

Thanks this is the kind of example I was looking for. It seems the city is trying to get something like this started. I thought it was underway already but maybe my school is actually ahead of the game.
So those two 30 minute blocks were during regular school hours then? And the non-classroom teachers obviously had this built into their schedules already? Because I'm thinking we wouldn't be able to do something like that unless their schedules were rearranged.

We were told we do need 6-8 weeks of RTI before referral, but we have to do it with no support or extra time.

Yes, the schedule was created that year with two 30 minute blocks at the end of the day where there were no specials so all extra teachers would be available to help with RTI. I really think it works well that way, because a classroom teacher can't provide services for all the kids who need it without extra support! It was nice because we had some of the 6th graders come down to 1st grade and they would do buddy reading or work on writing with some kids too! This doesn't work if it isn't school wide.
