Warning: (Upsetting story) Did anyone else read this? Pittsburgh Zoo yesterday?
I just read the article about the 2 year old boy falling into the wild african dog exhibit. The mother stood him up on the rail to get a better look at the dogs and he fell 14 feet down into the open area. They don't know whether the fall caused his death or the mauling, but they are saying the attack was horrific.
I am SICK over this. That poor child. And I am not the type of person to point a finger during a tragedy and place blame but I just can't understand why the mother placed him that high on a rail, especially in front of such a dangerous exhibit. My prayers go out to her and the family, such a terrible terrible tragedy
story

Horrible, preventable tragedy.
So sad
I'm sure that mother will NEVER forgive herself.

I know...how can you ever get over that??? People were saying awful things in the article, about putting her behind bars for life. I think she's suffered enough.
I just seriously feel sick. The poor child...its bad enough if a child dies from an unavoidable tragedy or illness...but this was preventable. There are signs over the entire zoo and in that particular exhibit about NOT placing anyone on the rails, to please stand back....He lost his balance and fell...and the most awful part is that there is a large mesh net underneath to catch anything that falls but he fell over that as well. UGH

You need a license to drive a car, not to be a parent.

Ok, why would she put a kid ABOVE on the railing? Why? Who does that? I am a parent, and I cant imagine what this woman is going through, but it wasnt the best decision. It was pretty freaking stupid.

I read that story this morning. It is horrific.
I can't imagine the guilt that mother is dealing with right now. And the fact that she had to watch her son not only fall, but get attacked by the dogs. Makes me ill just thinking about it.
Hey, as parents we have ALL done careless things with our children. Because you always think that nothing will happen....because usually nothing does. How terrible that she has to live with this regret, the visions of what happened, the guilt..for the rest of her life. And I wonder how it will affect her marriage. Can you imagine being the father? Ugh. Just horrible.

I read a comment from someone who works at the zoo and she said that you would not believe the amount of parents that place their kids up on the railings for a better look...
I guess in the parents mind they think that have a good grip on the child but a 2 year old moves around like crazy to begin with..and when they are higher than you and you're trying to support them, balance is lost.
It's sad and awful any way you look at it.

Warning: (Upsetting story) Did anyone else read this? Pittsburgh Zoo yesterday?
We are members of the Bronx Zoo and go 4-5 times a year. You would not believe the asinine things people do around animals. My DH got really upset at one guy who was in front of the gate at the snow leopards banging on the glass. The snow leopard was pacing on the other side of the glass, freaking out. The people with this guy were all laughing. DH was like, "Hey, what would you do if that broke?" The guy just looked at him. We were on the monorail once and a lady holding a young toddler kept standing standing up to take pics in the front of the car. They had to keep slowing the monorail to tell her to sit down. People don't get it. Animals are animals, in a zoo or not. Like a PP said, we have all done things with our kids that later we think, "Hmm, maybe that wasn't such a good idea," but this woman will have to live with that moment for the rest of her life.

It's an awful story. We were actually just at the Pittsburgh Zoo two weeks ago when we visited my SIL. That exhibit with the dogs was one of the ones where I didn't even want to go onto to the observation deck they had. It just didn't look safe. Railings were too low and the floor boards were a bit warped.
I feel awful for that mother and family. That poor child.

So horrible! Your story Reminds me of that video not too long ago that went viral of the lion going berserk trying to "eat" the baby on the other side of the glass, and how everyone on the video thought that was hysterical.
I'm sorry but I never found that video remotely amusing.

I read this last night. Such a horrible thing. We as parents do stupid things thinking nothing will happen. I would always get upset with my DH when he used to throw my DD up in the air to catch her. Of course my DD would love it and laugh but all I could think about was the "what if". Poor mother, she will never forgive herself.

Me either! I fond it so disturbing and couldn't imagine putting one of my children in front of a glass window to watch a lion try to devour him! WTF is wrong with people

This story makes me want to vomit. They showed a diagram of the exhibit on GMA this morning and what occurred. I can absolutely see a parent innocently standing their kid on one of those fences not thinking anything of it. I hope and pray that baby died on impact. What that mother had to envision will haunt her the rest of her life...and I'm sure anyone else who witnessed that. I can't even think about it.
