Opinion please
My ds just turned 3 and has been receiving speech through EI since January. He has made great progress with his speech and is talking in sentences etc.
We had him evaulated through cpse and he doesn't do well with strangers or following directions from strangers especially. He is very self- directed and a stubborn. He never really clicked with speech teacher.
Since he didn't do well on the evaluation process beharviiorally speaking they qualified him for a special ed preschool (which the speech teacher was very surprised). They also recommend that is not be integrated since he is very self directed and that it be full day.
I'm against full day for a 3 year old but I'm wondering if the pre-school is going to be the right fit or will he grow out of the stranger problem and not sitting to listen to a teacher. To me he seems fine when he is doing what he wants and even when we tell him what to do he does it (or as much as any 3yo).
Any advice - should I accept the services and push for integrated since once he settles he is fine and enjoys doing lots of activities.
TIA - sorry this was so long

Re: Opinion please
I would take the services. In my opinion, it can't hurt to take services you are not sure he needs but not taking recommended services would be too risky for me.

i agree with Cranky Pants.. take the services. my DS started school at 2. my DS is ASD, so its different, but at the age of 5 he is very social, listens to teachers, etc. but he never had a "stranger problem"
he would do great transitioning from therapist to therapist, even if he didnt know them.
take what you can get... you can always enroll him in after school programs, or if you take a half day program you can pay for a reg half day program after school.

Take wharever they give you!!!! I understand your feelings about full day preschool for a year old completely, but with time they do adjust nicely.

Re: Opinion please
IMO if your DS qualified for services, take them!!! it will only help. Even though DS is diagnosed with PDD-NOS he is very high functioning and depending on the day you would think he was typical. However, his attending and attention span is very poor. While socially, he would do well in an integrated class, they tend to be larger, 1/2 day and felt that that he would get lost. He is in a self contained class and even though I was concerned about his placement, he is doing very well. (He started full day when he was 2)
I would see how your DS does. You can always ask to have him moved later if it doesnt appear to be working out.

Agree with everyone else. Definitely take the placement. If it is not working out you can always change it.

I agree with everyone else, take all the services you can get. The earlier the children get them, the better off they will be. DS would not have come as far as he has without the great teachers he has had.
