Confused about appr

I thought this was a state wide thing. How come NYC teachers are exempt from this??? Or are all my friends in the dark about it? I feel as a li teacher I have more pressure on me this year and am just confused with the discrepancy between NYC and li. I don't know any other teachers anywhere else so I can't compare this to upstate teachers.

It is statewide. I am upstate and we are dealing with APPR, SLOs, and new evaluations. If you do not participate you lose state aid.

The "city" is not part of it.
They are part of NYS for some things but not others as they are their own system. NYC teachers help me out hereChat Icon with the explanation please.

But trust me, they are not exempt.
They have their own nonsense to worry aboutChat Icon Chat Icon

The city basically has the same thing but it's not called the same thing. They have an Office of Teacher Effectiveness and we are being evaluated based on Danielson's Framework for Teachers.

Close, but not really.....Admins are to use Danielson's framework as a guide for informal observations. Other formally rated observations are still narrative and are rated on a U/S as per the UFT Bargaining agreement.

well i don't know how informal they are because our admin's are entering the results on ARIS for each of those evaluations

Confused about appr

I kinda think no matter what they are doing ALL of your observations should NOT be a surprise! That is inappropriate on so many levels!

Re: Confused about appr

APPR is now being used for evaluation and teacher data reports. NYC teachers have been receiving teacher data reports for years though. Although they don't use the exact same terminology (hence NYC not using APPR, HEDI, SLO's), they are still being assessed using Danielson's for observations and they are linked to their student's test scores for their data reports. Don't worry- NYC teachers are definitely NOT off the hook- they have been basically doing this for years.... Chat Icon

Interesting...I feel the opposite way. Unannounced observations are very appropriate. You should be hitting most of the points whether or not an admin is in there so it should not matter when they come in. When observations are announced, I feel like a lot of people turn it into a dog and pony show. People who are ineffective teachers suddenly have the greatest lessons ever. Plus, I think unannounced observations are less stressful. Sure you do not know when they are coming in so that is slightly stressful, but once they get there, you just need to go with it.

I agree and I think NYC is not officially part of appr because the UFT has not come to an agreement with the particulars over the evaluation process. Frankly, I hope we don't come to an agreement until we get a new contract.

If you remember, NYC teacher data reports were published online and in all major news papers last year, with our names and assignments attached to them.

I disagree with observations. Teaching and learning is about a very delicate relationship that teachers are supposed to build with their students. Every class is different and there is no one who will convince me that an administrator can walk into a room to, observe a teacher for 40 minutes and determine that they are good at their job or not. I have a student who can fly way off the handle. We had some hard days but eventually came to an understanding that if she is having a bad day that she can put her head down and we will simply leave each other alone. It has helped tremendously and there are less and less of those days as we go. But if it happens to be one of those days and an administrator came into the room, I guarantee that would be held against me. Try to explain myself? Administrators and law makers live in a bubble and don't understand the reality of progress and success in the classroom. I do not agree with observations, announced or otherwise.

From this it sounds like you have not worked in a building with good leadership, which is unfortunate. not all administrators are out to get teachers.

Re: Confused about appr

I am really lucky to work for really good administrators, and I know that is not the case everywhere (my DH's school for example) but I really like to be observed-informally and formally. I feel like I want my administrator to see everything (good and bad) so that they can support teachers better. I have a kid in my class who has very challenging behaviors-hitting, spitting, flipping desks, screaming. Its really bad, and I like for my admins to witness it, so they understand that I am not joking when I ask for more resources/training/extra paras etc. I also like them to see the good work I am doing because I know that my kids are learning, and other people are slacking. I feel like if they observed more, half the nonsense that goes on wouldn't and that the admins would be better equipped to support the staff in a meaningful way. I was asking my school to hire a school-based behavior coach for a while and it took my AP sitting in one of our more challenging classes for a whole day for her to get on board. Its easy for them to talk about what you should be doing without seeing what we are up against.

I teach in D75, so we have less of the testing stuff to deal with, but we are still observed and evaluated on student progress, vis a vis data, etc.
