how much to convert from oil to gas?
anyone know?
we are on a budget plan of $425 a month for oil and i'm so over it.
We're having a generator installed into our house and therefore, a gas tank will be buried when we do so for it.
Can anyone give me insight on how much work is involved in converting to gas for heating? and price?

We are in the middle of converting right now. Is there gas in your area - on your street? LIPA came and brought the gas line from the street up to our house for free, but it was already in the area (I don't know how much they charge to bring it to your street if the line is not already there). We have to have a plumber bring it into the house and hook it up to a new burner and hot water heater. The new burner is about $1300 (I think) and the hot water heater a few hundred (I think). So far we got one estimate and the plumber wanted $4300 (inluding the burner and hot water heater), but we thought that seemed high, so we will be getting other estimates. (Our appliances - stove and oven - are already gas appliances that were converted by the previous owner to run off propane. We also have to look into having them converted back to natural gas, but haven't done that yet).

I would think so. I think we started with contacting LIPA for the application and they told us (based on our address) that the gas line was already in the street. Then they get back to you (MONTHS later), to let you know when they will be there to do the work from the street to the house. (I think we sent the application in around April/May and they did the work in the street in August (I can't even imagine how long it will take now - with everything going on with Sandy

There still could be gas lines in the area. I think the only way to know for sure is to contact LIPA
We have a propan tank for the oven and stove - I hate it and can't wait to get rid of it.

Can I ask a silly question? I see everyone commenting and saying LIPA connects you to the main line but isn't it National Grid? I thought LIPA only did electric?

Yes, it is National Grid - I guess I just always lump them together. Thanks for the correction

I know what you mean about lumping them! I wasn't sure if I was mistaken about it! Thanks for responding :)

Re: how much to convert from oil to gas?
We already had gas coming into the house for our stove and dryer. The line just need to be extended within the house by the plumber. Cost us about $6K, done is 6 hours, clean, neat and best thing we ever did. Burner King did it and we were very happy with them.
Also, our oil tank was going to need replacing ASAP which would have cost about $2K anyway.

I just had this done. My home is in Nassau County. I already had a gas meter. I switched from an oil fired boiler and separate oil fired hot water heater. The total was $6,800 to remove both those items as well as the 250 gallon oil tank in basement. They installed a Burnham boiler and AO Smith hot water heater. I am also getting a $880 gift card for converting from oil to gas and $400 energy efficiency rebate from National Grid. So the bottom line was $5,520.
Good luck finding someone that can do it. My guy is booked all the way through December replacing boilers and other items damaged during Sandy.
