latch-key kids

at what age do you think it is acceptable/safe for a child to have a key to the house and get off the bus and let him/herself in the house after school?

Depends on the kid.

Usually 5th or 6th grade from what I've seen.

When I was pretty young - like 7 or 8, my sister & I would come home on our own but we were less aware back then.

Re: latch-key kids

I think it also depends on the kid but in my experience it was middle school as there is no after-care at that point for the child to go to.

Re: latch-key kids

TOTALLY depends on the kid. My 11 year old is responsible and mature.. but he has eplilepsy and I am not comfortable with the idea of him being home alone for 3 hours until he outgrows that condition (hopefully around 13).

My 9 year old.. he's so far from mature it's not remotely funny. I can't imagine allowing him to be home alone at 11.

But typically I think most kids are probably ready between 6th and 8th grade (11 - 13 years old).

Re: latch-key kids

Agree that it depends on the kid but will add that it also depends on the parent.

I watch too much criminal minds and law and order so for me, never.

DH and I talk about this all the time because whenever DS is ready, I have to go back to work full time. So I am pushing for 15 or so... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: latch-key kids

My DD is 10 and we showed her where the spare key is IN CASE she ever got off the bus and we weren't home. Definitely don't trust her with a key of her own yet though.

Re: latch-key kids

Truthfully I won't be comfortable for a long time. I am way to paranoid about abductions. If I go back to work I would have one of my parents be at my house to let my girls in, or pick up at a bus stop. If my parents couldn't do it I would hire someone.

latch-key kids

I just don't know.
I want to go with never.
seems like a small window between being old enough to do it...then too old that they will be having houseguests over without supervision.
