I want to book a vacation for next October but my son will be starting kindergarten. Can I take him out for a few days?
TIA

We are. Dd goes now and we are taking her out in march. We already told her teacher and she's fine with it.

Your kid, your choice. I take my kids out for a few days each year. No one bats an eye. Family vacations are important to me. To each their own though.

In Kindergarten - 3rd I wouldn't hesitate to pull them out for a bit. After that I might not do it.

My DS is in Kindergarten and we may pull him in March for a couple days. I am nervous about it, but, March is when my DH gets vacation and we work around that as well.

Re: Can I take my son out kindergarten
We took my DD out of K for a week last month for an OOS family wedding. (though with hurricane sandy's arrival and aftermath, she ended up not missing any school!)
I have no qualms about it. I may feel differently when she's in HS but while she is younger, I feel she is gaining a lot by seeing and doing things outside her life of school and home. Vacationing on school breaks may not be feasible all the time, especially since Spring break falls during DH's busiest time of year.

Can I take my son out kindergarten
i never had an issue with the thought of it...but his school is full of attendence nazis. everything needs a note. vacations do not get approved. work cannot be made up for unapproved absences. when parents come home from deployment, kids are taken out of school and they go back to hometown for a visit. this is so common that social workers are called for neglect. we canceled our oct vaca due to it

Re: Can I take my son out kindergarten
Totally a personal choice. I've only ever had them miss school for a family function, never for a vacation though. I would totally consider it.
My boys (K and 2nd grade) just missed 3 days of school in Oct to go to Louisiana with my inlaws. It was their great-grandmother's 102nd birthday, so they went to meet her for the first time and to attend a family party.
I emailed their teachers before the trip was booked and they were fine with it. When the boys got back they just made up the work.

Re: Can I take my son out kindergarten
Thanks for all of your responses. I was afraid I would get in trouble! It would only be for 3 days.

Re: Can I take my son out kindergarten
Absolutely!!!! If there was a good time to do it, Kindergarten is it. How much are they REALLY going to fall behind? I teach 4th/5th grade and when they miss a few days it's overwhelming, but in Kindergarten, you can find out ahead of time what they are missing and you can teach it to them!!!!

Re: Can I take my son out kindergarten
I wouldn't think twice about doing it.
As an aside, many LI school districts have canceled the winter break due to all the closings from Sandy and needing to make up time. I am sure many families spent money on planned vacations, so my guess is that there is going to be a whole bunch of students - from K-12th grade - missing a week of school this February!
