Re: Hurricane Sandy Peeps: Check In

Our house is still not liveable - we are having an electrician come by today to start rewiring the basement. We spent all weekend gutting the basement, and once we get the basement re-wired, we have to order a new hot water heater and furnace. Then we can get the electrician to rewire the first floor of the house and restore any broken connections.. The way it is going, we may not be living there until at least Christmas.

Re: Hurricane Sandy Peeps: Check In

Anyone's HO policy cover flood restoration? See if it's covered because if anything else is they might.

The restoration companies are awesome.

Hurricane Sandy Peeps: Check In

I am in LB too. I wanted to share the contractor who did our mold remediation-- the man's name is Daniel and his number is 630-639-9990.
Our house was fine, tg, but our crawl space was flooded to the first floor. Our house had that funky smell a lot of you were describing, and it is gone now that he cleaned/sprayed the crawl space for us.
Good luck everyone!

Re: Hurricane Sandy Peeps: Check In

S. Massapequa here... going to be around 3 months before we get back in, we had somewhere between 3 & 4 feet of water. (Our house is a ranch)

Most of the house is gutted, except the kitchen. We were advised to leave the kitchen until the adjusters could see it since it was so new. (We have since learned that we shouldn't have done that), Adjusters have come and gone... flood insurance adjuster won't even have a report for us for another 2 months but we are waiting on an advance from them. FEMA inspector came and declared our area a "disaster zone" and said he would "expedite" our claim and a few hours later we had a denial letter sitting in our account because we have flood insurance. (which I totally understand, but why tell us you are expediting our claim when we were getting denied anyways). Fortunately, we are getting the housing assistance from FEMA.

Just got a quote from a highly recommended contractor last week and we are most likely going to hire him. Once we officially hire him, he said he could start immediately.. so hopefully next week we will get the show on the road here.

We are also fortunate to be staying at my in-laws for the duration.

The FEMA inspector is not an actual FEMA employee they are just contractors hired to inspect homes. He was basically talking out of his ass on that one!

Re: Hurricane Sandy Peeps: Check In

I am so upset I feel like crying we may not go back at all

We rent our house and the landlord is trying to cut corners everywhere. The basement flooded to the ceiling and he didn't start pumping out the water for at least 4 days and then it took 3days to pump it all out. He doesn't wAnt to remove the stairs or some stupid wood paneling in one room and we know there is mold there we saw it. He is only using the bleach mixture and outright said he wouldn't pay for anything more than that. I'm sure there is more

I have 2 small children I can't live there if mold was not removed

Inspectors came and told him he had to fix these things he is trying to somehow get around it. Even if they come and say not good enough and he has to redo it how long is this going to take??
I am going to lose my mind where we are staying now!
Dh is taking pics and video of everything when the landlord isn't there

The real kicker he asked us for rent to help him out meanwhile we only got rental assistance fro FEMA. Yet we lost washer dryer, tv, couch, bed, treadmill, I know they don't cover any of that but don't ask me for rent all your stuff is covered by your insurance

Eta the electrician is having problems with him, and he said he hired a crew to work on the basement and after 2days fired half of them cause it was too expensive. He is super cheap

Did you have rental insurance to cover contents? Can you find a new apt? I would get the heck out of there and not look back. He can't hold you to that lease. Get a lawyer.

Still not home. Our apt is fine TG (we're on 10) but the buildings are a wreck. 5 feet of water and boardwalk washed through our lobbies (Rockaway Beach).

I've been back 3 times since, and each time re-traumatized. I'm born and raised here. My parents have not seen Rockaway yet for themselves(only on tv) and keep saying they'll be home each weekend that passes.

Ang: looks like the bungalows on 108 were pretty ok. How about that boat on CBB for weeks tying up traffic Chat Icon

The first time i drove in i was brining my dad to the Bungalow to shut the water off and we went down 100th St and turned onto SFP and we saw where the boardwalk was supposed to be for the first time and we both got really emotional. I had said when someone asked about feeling normal again... i said i wont feel normal until i can walk on the boards again...

My parents got lucky that their house is on the only 2 blocks in Rockaway that werent touched.

I will never make fun of my mom when she says 109th Street is the highest point on the penninsula. lol....

I havent been back to my house since last Sunday, they were starting to tow the cars that were abandoned on CBB, the boat originally landed right across the street from my house.... i dont know why they didnt take it away when they moved it out of the middle of the street... it really caused a lot of rubber necking and people pulling over to get out and take pictures. I almost got in a fight because i yelled at a guy to get the smile off his face when he got out to take a picture of the boat..

GOOD FOR YOU yelling at the guy!! I'm still not back but when i'm home I see "tourists" coming to our pool to take pictures and posing in front of what used to be the boardwalk. Really pisses me off.

FYI Big rally planned for Dec 2 at 1pm on Beach 86th St to demand the rock jettys! I invite anyone reading this to join us!!

I'm sorry some of you are still going through rough times.

Our insurance guy is supposed to come tomorrow, and DH's plumber friend is supposed to install our boiler as well.

I really hope we can get back into the house in the next 2 weeks.

Personally, we are fine but that's nice for you to offer. Maybe try posting a general post and some of the ladies could let you know of people who may be in need.

Your LL sounds like a scumbag, and I would make sure he isn't trying to claim YOUR lost items in his homeowner's insurance.

I hope it all works out Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Hurricane Sandy Peeps: Check In

I haven't been on here much lately, so I'm just seeing this thread. Finally, after 4 weeks, I think my kids and I will be able to go home in the next few days! I cannot wait! Our basement was completely flooded but thankfully the water missed the 1st floor by a couple of inches. The basement is being gutted, just about everything is down. Just a little bit more of the floor to rip up. We have our new furnace and hot water heater. We also got our new panel, the electrician just has to come back to finish up and replace all the wiring. We also will be having someone come in and check and spray for mold. It's been a rough month moving from place to place and being away from my DH (this has been especially hard for the kids) who has been doing a lot of the work himself. At the end of the day, while there is still much work to be done I know we are lucky compared to so many others.

Re: Hurricane Sandy Peeps: Check In

Just wanted to bump this up to see how everyone is doing.

I officially moved back into my home today!

I am getting the carpets and furniture steamed right now as I type, and it smells great in here compared to just a few weeks ago.

Chat Icon

None of this was under water, thank goodness, but I just felt like there was mud and dust and germs everywhere.

Also loving the new boiler. It seems like it works so much better than our old one.

I walked in here the other day and it felt like a sauna, on one of those cold days, in my kitchen, which is always cold.

Right now we are on a quest to find a new washer/dryer and then I will really feel back to normal.

This is us word for word. We just got power TODAY. The electrician won't install basement lights until Sheetrock is put in. We plan to call mold removal companies tomorrow and Monday so they can inspect our basement. Then we have to call contractors to get Sheetrock installation appointments and quotes. Then start shopping for a washer and dryer. I can't wait to sleep in my own bed again tonight!

We just got a quote for sheetrocking the whole basement, putting insulation, and framing for $12,000. Another guy quoted $22,000! Is this normal for 700sq feet? I'm shocked!

I think those are going ranges.

Is it worthwhile to make it a livable space down there?

Our basement is basically just the concrete blocks. Not worth it to us since we have gotten water in there (not like the hurricane) before.

Re: Hurricane Sandy Peeps: Check In

Moved back in last night after getting heat back. A lot of work to be done but our insurance company isnt getting back to us about anything so we are stuck and cant start more repairs. We have major foundation cracks and are freaking out about what is covered. Most of my neighbors are still gutting and some are living on trailors on their property.

I have this strange aversion to going anywhere north of sunrise highway-its still too hard for me to go to areas unaffected since people just cant relate. Not that i blame them but its hard because it seems most, even my own family, dont understand what these communities are still going through.
