Roofing- what am I looking for?
I have gotten 5 different estimates ranging from 7k-15k...
The 2 companies we are choosing between are both BBB accredited with an A+ rating, both come with manf. warranty.... and are within 1k from each other....
I dont want to pay for things I dont need...
Ice and water shield- just valleys and starter course; or does it need to be the whole thing?
15lb felt paper or 30lb?
What are key things I should be looking for?

Re: Roofing- what am I looking for?
we just did our roof. we only paid for materials as we had a friend who is a roofer put it on. We stripped the entire roof and went with 30lb felt paper and we did the ice and water shield along the edges. As far as shingles we used GAF Timberline. (it's one of the more popular brands) as far as price, I can't help you there but we got 16 packages of shingles, 8 packages of felt, 3 or 4 of the ice and water and the ridgeline for 2500 for supplies. we have a small house of only 1200 sq feet with a very easy roof, just one peak

Re: Roofing- what am I looking for?
Im not a member of angie list... so I cant see the reviews :(
My quote is:
Supply labor and material necessary to: Rip and remove existing shingles to plywood and dispose of all debris in Outer County supplied dumpsters.
Includes (3) sheets of plywood if needed.
Make repairs to the existing flashing around the brick chimney and make cricket behind it to divert water.
Install new 30lb. felt. Install ice and watershield in all valleys and along starter course.
Shingle with 30 year architectural shingles (color by owner). Replace all vents and boots. Install ridge vents.
Includes Tarping, work area protection, clean-up and dumpsters.
Extra charge for plywood replacement @ $ 50.00/ sheet as needed and based upon present cost of plywood.
Is there anything else; I need? They are also using the GAF timberline brand

Re: Roofing- what am I looking for?
A starter course for your new roof would be a good idea because it keeps the water out. And from what I know, 15 lb felt paper is better than 30 lb. 15 lb paper keeps the moisture out and allows for more air to pass through, as compared to 30 lb paper. If you're still in doubt, ask both companies for references and photos of their previous roofing work so you know exactly what you'll be getting.

Not sure of the kind of roofing but I used John Goess Roofing and was very pleased.
