Successfully cried it out. AMAZING.
I used the method pinned in the mom support thread at the top of this page.
Night one for us - put her to bed at 815pm, she started crying at 11:45p. Did the 3, 5, 7, 10, 10, 10, etc. until around 1am when she finally fell asleep and slept until 8am. *** This night was torturous. DH slept while I did it and at some points DD was crying so hard. I used my stern voice but I still wiped her tears and kissed her forehead each time I went in. I did change her diaper around 1245p as well.
Night 2 - Put her down at 730pm, she woke around 12am, only took about 20 mins of the CIO method - we still did the 3,5,7 one. Slept until 7am. DH did this night.
Night 3 - slept from 7pm until 7am. She woke at 330a but soothed herself back to sleep. Just whiny cried for about 15 mins. I never used the CIO method b/c she never full-on cried on night 3.
We started it on Thursday night.
She's been sleeping for about 12 hrs each night.
AMAZING.
EDITED FROM ORIGINAL POST BY SUMLYNMAD:
this is the progressive waiting approach...
so, nite one: progression is 3 minutes, 5, 7, 10, 10, 10, 10....
nite 2: 5 minutes, 7, 10, 13, 13, 13, 13....
nite 3: 7 minutes, 10, 13, 15, 15, 15....
nite 4 (usually not needed) 10, 13, 15, 17, 17, 17....
progress as such if needed for more than 4 nites...
these times simply mean this:
when DD/DS starts to cry, look at your watch, after the 3 minute mark, go in, tell them in a STERN voice "mommy's here, i love you, but its time for nite nite...its nite nite time, ill see you in the morning, mommys here...."
Do not stay in the room for longer than 1-2 minutes...the point is to reassure them that you are not abandoning them...and I say STERN voice bc, well, dont use your mommy voice, that soft voice that they love so much...be stern and matter of fact....
the crying will probably intensify as you leave the room, but look at your watch again as u leave, and you wait until they have been crying for 5 minutes before you go in again....repeat at 7 minutes, 10 10 10....etc...
BUT, and this is a HHHHUUUUGGGEEEEE but....
If, at any time, they stop crying or start to whimper, do not go in!! Even if you are due to go in, don't- this is a sign they are soothing themselves, which is what you want....
say you are on a 10 minute wait, and at 7 minutes they stopped crying, but a minute later, started crying again, this does not mean wait 2 minutes and go in...this means, you RESET the CLOCK!!! Make sure they are crying the full amount of time....
and thats that, continue with nite 2, and for me, nite 3 was a breeze....

Successfully cried it out. AMAZING.
Good for you and yours
I could never LOL I'm just not built that way. Thankfully I didnt mind having AJ sleep with us and loved holding her as much as I can/could. At 4yrs old I think i can say it worked out fine. She didnt want to sleep in our bed by 2yrs old (her decision) and slept solid.
Good for your family and many peaceful nights to look forward to.

Re: Successfully cried it out. AMAZING.
congrats!!!!!!!!
it's amazing how it changes you when you get sleep.
it takes patience, time, and some tears from the adult, haha but its worth it.
It took my dd longer than 3 days to adjust b/c she is so stubborn, even now at 2 1/2. we have to revisit every now and again but its worth it.

Re: Successfully cried it out. AMAZING.
Did straight out CIO with my first and he went from waking constantly through the night to sleeping through 11 hours!
Never had to do it with DD. She naturally STTN on her own early on.
Every kid is different.
I am glad you are finally getting some rest

It was not obnoxious. I think whatever you do that makes you and your family happy, then good for you. I could not, I’m weak. I’m a sucker for my kiddo. But to each their own. Is my way of handling her crying less worthy because I didn’t CIO?
Whatever. Good for you OP. Like I said twice in my original post. I don’t want my sentiment to be skewed, incase you read it as she did.

Thank you for posting. I think I'm going to try this. As much as it kills me to do it, my DD needs more sleep which she is absolutley refusing.

Re: Successfully cried it out. AMAZING.
She's 7 months.
It really wasn't THAT hard. Especially because you keep going in so she knows you're not abandoning her. Or him.
PLUS because we had just fed her at 7ish and she started crying at 1145 - I know it wasn't because she was hungry, KWIM?
I think the first night - after I changed her diaper at 1245 - if she had kept crying, I probably would have called it quits. I changed her diaper at 1245ish. 1:08am was the time I was due back in and I didn't have to go back in she had fallen asleep by then.
I did keep kissing her and wiping her tears every time I went in so I didn't feel like a total monster either.
Good luck!

To the OP- congrats! Great accomplishment!! I actually dont think it was obnoxious at all. I have two and did exactly what xelindrya did with my first and with my second I am doing exactly what the OP is doing. It just shows how 2 different approaches could both come out with positive results. Not everyone has the same parenting styles. Its like the breastfeeding threads. Some breastfeed some dont. It doesnt mean both sides cant share and in the end all children are happy and healthy.

I hear you - DD was only getting up once per night - we would feed her and she'd be back asleep within 20 mins. It really wasn't a sleep issue for us - it wasn't hurting us in any way.
I did it because I wanted to create a better sleep habit for when she's older. In my mind, the sooner you start with things the better/easier.

Re: Successfully cried it out. AMAZING.
Very jealous. DS #1 was stressful and at 3 still a pain to get down. #2 DD was pretty good then got bad, Now a little better.
I live in a three family house so that whole method would keep the whole house up. If I could have done, I would have with the first, but couldn't torture the whole house.

Good for you!!! Enjoy your uninterrupted sleep! After doing CIO it is nice to know that if they are waking up there is a reason for (ie teeth sick etc)

Thanks for posting. We are going through hell right now with both our girls not STTN. I am a freaking mess without sleep. I am going to talk to DH about trying this.

agree. Not everyone can do this method and I'm glad that the OP did it and it worked. I never did it with my DD and she was a horrible sleeper for almost 2 years, especially the 1st year was a nightmare, waking up crying 4-5 times a night, screaming before bed. But I just held her, rocked her, sang to her... Woke up every time she did , worst was that she refused to sleep in our bed. so it wasn't an easy time, but I never thought of doing a cio, because I knew I couldn't go through with it. That's just not something I could do. I wish I could have. But of course they say never say never, who knows what the future will bring with my DS

Successfully cried it out. AMAZING.
I think what Jenny Penny meant about it being obnoxious is the part when you stated that 'Thankfully I didnt mind having AJ sleep with us and loved holding her as much as I can/could.' It implies that the people who try this posted method MIND holding their baby or MIND their baby sleeping with them...
It was a pretty passive/aggressive statement...
We understand its not for you, but just because its not for everyone doesnt mean they mind holding their baby...
