Anybody familiar with Georgia?
I am looking to move in the future and have been looking into Peachtree City Georgia. Anybody know anything about the area or Georgia in general? I'm not so sure about the schools- I have heard mixed things. It looks gorgeous there though!

Re: Anybody familiar with Georgia?
DH's cousins and their parents all moved down there. I want to say they live in an area about 1 hour outside of Atlanta.
I have heard mixed things about the schools as well as the health care systems.
I know they all have good jobs, but they've also been living there at least for 5-10 years. They are also very highly educated as well, and had NY-working experience in education and heath care.
There's also stereotypical issues that go on when one thinks of "the South".

Re: Anybody familiar with Georgia?
Peach Tree city and Alpharetta are great. As is Kennesaw and Dallas. Alpharetta is the highest rated school dist in GA. Traffic is not so great. It's worse than LI. Check out zipskinny.com and www.city-data.com.
College is funded by the lotto and both of my cousins went to college (UGA) for free. I think you need to maintain a B average or higher.

Re: Anybody familiar with Georgia?
DH’s aunt lives in Alpharetta and we visited her a few years ago when she was in the hospital there. And I have to say, the hospital was like a freaking resort. It was really nice.

Re: Anybody familiar with Georgia?
We are also looking into the Atlanta area. I did some research on peachtree city. It looks amazing! I believe a lot of delta execs live there because it is a good commute to the airport. It seems very community driven. Paths where people drive their golf carts around. Beautiful homes. We are looking more in the north atlanta area though, sandy springs, roswell, dunwoody. I think Atlanta is one of those cities where you sort fo need to have an idea of where your job will be before choosing a location. Getting from the north end to the sounth end can take awhile, especially if you hit traffic.

Re: Anybody familiar with Georgia?
Thanks everybody! Does anybody know what the taxes are like there? I can't find any of that info out online. I also saw that there are HOA fees as well (in Peachtree City).

my sister lives north of atlanta-she has 8 acres...her taxes are 5k a year. her and her boyfriend have not really embraced atlanta at all-other then 6 flags. they find it intimidating, rude people..they relocated from asheville, nc...so i think they are in a culture shock. it is freaking hot there though-like really hot. i love the heat-but that is a different kind of heat

DH has been down there a bit for work and says the suburbs are really beautiful. Alpharetta, Sandy Springs, Roswell, Duluth and John's Creek are all safe, good schools near shopping, dining etc.

Re: Anybody familiar with Georgia?
DH's company is in Suwanee (next to Alpharetta). Suwanee was ranked top 10 places to live in US by Money magazines.
The NYers that go down there usually come back. One of DH's friend's daughter felt pressure to join the big Evangelical youth group.

I have friends in Atlanta (always lived in GA) & in Buckhead (moved there from Westchester County). I know they love it there & have good jobs, but I can't speak to the schools/taxes concerns.

Re: Anybody familiar with Georgia?
Peachtree City is very nice. It is just south of the city. I would definitely figure out where you are going to work before laying down roots. Your commute could be very rough. I live in Suwanee and love it. Suwanee has top rated schools. It is not next to Alpharetta though. Alpharetta is minimum 30 minutes away, more with traffic. There are fabulous school districts and not so fabulous school districts. You need to do your homework. Peachtree City has great schools.
We love Georgia and would never move back. Everyone is so nice and welcoming. There are tons of NY'ers down here. The pace is slower, the homes are bigger, the taxes are less and in general we love it. We have never felt religious pressure. I know Christians, Jews, Muslims. It is a real melting pot down here.
The HOPE scholarship is the college program people are referring to. It is a great program but quite frankly, I am not certain it will still be around when my kids are ready for college. They have been making cut backs to it for years now.
Good luck with your search. Feel free to ask me any questions.
