Cat Claw Covers
Does anyone have experience with these? We've had our cat for about 4 years, and he sometimes scratches my DH (never really me for some reason). Today he scratched my FIL's face, and he was bleeding pretty badly! I felt awful, and I'm just scared that the cat's going to one day attack our DD (and now we have another baby on the way). I don't know what to do with him. We love him so much, and declawing is NOT an option. Please tell me if you have any experience with cat claw covers. TIA!

Re: Cat Claw Covers
I have not been too successful with cat claw covers. I find regularly clipping the nails to be more effective. I also would try to figure out why your cat is scratching your DH. What is he doing when it happens? Is your cat scratching out of the clear blue or is your cat giving signs that he wants to be left alone?
For the record, my female cat is not the nicest to people other than myself. On occasion she has scratched my DS in the past (when he was bothering her, pulling her tail, shoving a toy in her face), etc. I always discipline DS and tell him that if he is not nice to the cat, the cat is not going to be nice to him. After three year, both of them have worked it out and we have not had a scratching incident in a long time. (He is not so irritating to her and she is more tolerant of him).

Re: Cat Claw Covers
I don't have a cat, but I know someone who uses these. Her cats really don't seem to mind them. She even gets them festive colors for holidays. But I don't know if she started them with it at a young age to get them used to it. It might be harder now.

Re: Cat Claw Covers
I use them! I get them off eBay for less money... they last about a month on my cats, are easy to put on (if they are good about getting their nails clipped)...
My cats don't like it for about twenty minutes after and then they give up fighting them. make sure you hold them for about five minutes while glue dries.
I put them on the front claws only. I'll trim the nails and start putting on about three a night.
They are so worth it to me... wish I had been using them since they were kittens. My couch would be in Better shape then.
plus they are super cutelol

Cat Claw Covers
My parent's cat will not tolerate them. They clip his nail regularly and it has helped.

It's so random when the cat scratches DH...out of nowhere. Sometimes he'll do it while DH is walking up the stairs (he'll scratch his legs). Most of the time it's out of the clear blue.
Thanks for the responses! I think I'll give the claw covers a try. My vet says they can put them on for me for $15 (plus the cost of the covers). I don't know how my cat will react to them, but I think it's worth a try.

No, this is another thing we have to start doing. I'm honestly not comfortable doing it...I would be afraid that I would cut too short and hurt him. DH said he would give it a try, so I was just on Amazon looking for good clippers (haven't bought them yet though).

It's not too hard to clip their nails, just clip off the long skinny hook where the thick triangle part ends. You can probably search for a video on youtube to see where to cut. Or google for photos. It's easier if their nails are clear not black. I would also suggest having the vet do the first nail clipping and then put the tips on while you watch.
Also I have heard that cats outer nails shed off, so if you get the tips after they shed they will last longer. I believe they shed every 4-6 weeks which is why the tips only last about that long.
My cats are pretty good about getting clipped. I wait until they are relaxing and then I gently push their claws out and get as many as I can. If I want to clip them all I have also scruffed them to do it. Check out a video on how to scruff a cat the right way or ask the vet to show you how if you are worried. I will say that if you can get them to do it willingly that would be easier even if it takes you a couple of days to get them all.
Also, can I suggest increasing your cats exercise and see if that helps him stop ambushing your husband. If you don't have a pole toy (It's a stick with a rope and some feathers on the end). My suggestion would be to start getting him to play for several minutes once or twice a day until he is panting.
I wouldn't suggest a laser toy unless no other toys work, they are very unsatisfying to a cat. Cats like to catch their prey. Ideally he should get to catch his toy several times while you play. This is also a fun thing for your kids to do if they are old enough. You can have him chase the toy around corners, up and down off chairs and other obstacles. It gets them tired faster. :O)

Sorry I didn’t give you more info before, I was in a rush. Cut his nails, when he scratches you or DH it won’t hurt or really scratch your skin if his nails are short. When cats nails get long they are like little razors! I’ve been clipping my cats nails since he was a baby so he is used to it, not his favorite thing in the world, but he lets me do it. What you want to do is take his paw and push gently down so the claws come out. You want to cut the translucent part….you don’t want to cut down to the quick because you can injur him. It’s hard to explain, but once you take a look at the claws , I think you’ll understand what I mean. There is probably a you tube video demonstrating it. I use the clippers that look like this, any Pet store should have them. Once you do it the first time, you’ll see how easy it is! Image Attachment(s):

Re: Cat Claw Covers
Thank you so much again for the replies and info! I'm going to buy clippers, and if my hubby can't clip them we'll take him to the vet to do it. I guess I'll hold off on the claw covers for now. And I do have to play with him more...I haven't been playing with him all that much ever since DD arrived.
