Burning garlic- Help!

So, I am new to cooking and keep runnig against the same problem!

Alot of soup recipes (and recipes in general) call for placing , garlic, onions etc, in oil over medium hurt for 7-10 minutes but my garlic gets Burnt in a matter of seconds.. how do I prevent this??

Burnt garlic is the WORST! There's nothing you can do but start over once it's burnt. Chat Icon

Try starting at a lower heat and maybe a bit more oil. There should be enough oil that the garlic and onions are able to get a light sheen to them after you stir for a bit.

And don't worry about timing it. Stir until the onions are softened and start to get more translucent and the garlic has started to soften. It might only be 5 minutes or less depending on how much you have!

I hate burnt garlic, so if the recipe says to saute them together, I saute the onions for the whole time and throw the garlic in 3/4 of the way through.

I always add my garlic a minute before I am about to add anything else in like meat or veggies. If I am sautéing fresh veggies then I wait until the veggies are done and add the garlic at the end.

Yes, definitely add the garlic with something else if you can...like if it says to sauté garlic and then add onions, I just add the onions and garlic together. And start at a gentler heat...you can always turn the burner up if you need to.

If a recipe calls for sautéing garlic and onion in oil, I'll fry the onion first and add the garlic a minute before the onions are done.

Sort of related- I puree garlic cloves in water and freeze them in ice cube trays. Then I put them in a freezer bag. Whenever I need garlic, I just take a cube out of the freezer. It's a time saver for me, and I don't waste any cloves!

sounds like you are heating the oil first. make sure the oil isnt too hot before you put the garlic in. the way i test that is by dropping a tiiiiiiiiiny drop of water in the oil and if it crackles, then i know to turn the burner down reallll low.

I never listen to the recipe when it says that! I always wait until the onions are pretty much done, then throw in the garlic for a minute or two and make sure I have the next ingredient ready to add in so that once the garlic is done I can add that so the garlic doesn't burn.

Thanks for posting this. My garlic burns a lot too. I try to keep the burner at a low setting, but I will also try adding the garlic later on- good idea!
