Student bringing in a bedbug

Im skeved!
It was definetly a bed bug, live, crawling out of a notebook.

I was told to bag it and it will be sent to health dept for confirmation (which i have been told, they never get back to you) this is not my concern, im afraid of them being in my room. and bringing them home

I was told I cant say anything to the kids parent or put his stuff in a plastic bag

this in NYC if it matters

So then what? Im so annoyed!:

Be sure to put the things you take home with you in a bag for sure! I had this situation once and left my coat in the car and brought in a sealed plastic bag with keys, phone.

Ewww. I just got a letter from my daughters preschool class that strep is rampant and scabies and lice have been reported. I feel like we cant escape!

I had a big issues with bedbugs in my classroom a couple of years ago. It was one student and his apartment was so infested that he would come in with them crawling on his shirt. What I did was (and made sure my administration knew I was doing it), I bought the XXL Ziplock bags and trained my students to put all of their belongings in their individual bags when they came in the classroom. My paras and I would then spray 99% alcohol into each bag. It has to be 99%- it suffocates them. They would literally fall off the student's backpack and Jacket in the bag. I was able to ensure I didn't get it or my other students and kept it out of the classroom that way. It's disgusting and was a process, but its what worked for me.....

I'm sorry..health risk! Why is taking no action ok? My friend's class had a lice outbreak and was instructed INSTRUCTED by nurse and admin to bag her students things in trash bags PROVIDED by admin for TWO weeks!!

I hear ya but if a kid has an asthma attack due to the spraying will u be held liable?

I was told I could be sued for defamation of character for saying a student had bed bugs. I wanted to call a parent to let them know I found bed bugs in the child's bookbag and the nurse wouldn't let me.

Having bed bugs does not create a hazard for your health? IMO, it does..they can give you nasty bites and what if you have an allergy plus it's a MAJOR cost/inconvenience to get rid of them..being overly PC in this case is disgusting...come on..where does it end?

We are told its not a health risk, which I don't believe, but it's what we are told. I never told the parents that another student in our class had a bed bug- a note went home from admin that there were bedbugs in the school. (Parents just didn't know it was from our class)

I had this a couple of years ago in my class..I saw it crawling on my students shoulder and almost vomited! I felt bad for him too because he knew what it was and was mortified. I quickly took a piece of scotch tap and stuck it off of his shirt and put it in a zip lock.

The DOE is required to send it out to be tested, as it is policy. SHortly after, an exterminator came to treat my room..which was useless, they really needed to treat this kids house.

I, to protect myself, bought ziploc XXL bags, and kept my jacket/bag in there so I didnt;t bring anything home. You can also request that the custodian place glue traps in your room to monitor activity..I did this and never saw anything stuck to them..and never saw anything else crawling in my room..thankfully.

Happens in our building all the time. They eventually get back to you, confirm it's a bed bug, and come and spray after hours so you have no idea if they really sprayed or not. And none of it makes any difference because if you work in any area where bed bugs are a problem then the issue is with the apartment buildings and spraying your school will do nothing. When this has affected my classroom I have protected myself by bagging my stuff in huge ziplocs.
