That is not the norm at all. The drivers do not enforce it, nor are they supposed to since its not a law. Most of my friends kids have said their kindergartners do not buckle on the bus.
That is not good. I remember them doing it and asking my kids if they do it on the way home too and they always said yes.
DD is in K and buckles her seat belt every day.
The driver is not allowed to assist though, the child must be able to fully do it themselves.

I've seen the buses driving down the road with the kids all bouncing around, standing up, hopping seats etc. It would be nice if the children all sat, nicely buckled in on the bus, but that's just not a reality. Bus is "fun" time. I've seen it when I'm stuck behind one, more than once. Whether it be a child in kindergarten, or one in 5th grade, they should ALL be seated and buckled, but the majority of the drivers just don't even mention it to the students. If they are squeezed 3 in a seat, they sometimes can't be bothered with trying to pull their belt from under the person next to them, or if little Johnny next to them isn't wearing his, why should she wear hers? So the only thing you can do as a parent is just keep telling them to wear it. You better believe my son was scared enough today to wear his seatbelt tomorrow. But sadly he just had no idea he should on the bus because not one time has the driver said to (as per him), even though our own personal vehicles don't move without seat belts on.

I'm glad I'm not the only one with these fears. I guess I'll just have to instill that DS should wear his seatbelt, just like in mommy's car (maybe I'll even be 'that' mom that tells the bus driver I want it on him and to make sure he has it on).
I really hope that there are teachers outside throughout the year directing him, it would just make me feel better. We shall see.
