Back for number 2!

Hi girls! Congrats to all of you! I'm pregnant again with my second. I had my dd, in 2011. I can't believe she is 2! I'm about 7 weeks and I have my first appointment on 2/11. I called university associates but none of the drs had any available appointments so they gave me an appointment with one of the midwives, Susan Altman. Anyone ever used the midwives? Thoughts?

Congrats Gail! I see the midwives and love them! I am pretty sure I saw Susan for one of my pre-natal appointments with ds. I will be seeing them again with this pregnancy. Let me know if you have any questions!

So glad to hear you like them! I guess my only question is what is the difference between seeing the midwives instead of the drs? When I had my dd it was with a regular ob do I'm not sure what to expect. Do they do all the same sonos, like the 12 week and 20 week? Sorry if these are stupid questions.

Not stupid questions at all! Honestly, I don't think there is much of a difference other than that, if you needed a c-section, they can't do that for you. If you were to need one then they would stay in the room with you but one of the university associate ob's would do the c-section. I feel like they are more hands on and down to earth then most ob's. They treat you as more of a peer and most of them have you call them by their first name. They do an 8, 12 and 20 wk sono. There are no growth sonos or internals (unless otherwise necessary).

Thanks so much. I was looking at their website and it said something about being able to labor in any position, wearing your own clothes during delivery and eating and drinking during labor. All of those things sound pretty appealingChat Icon

Yea, all that really depends on if you labor without an epi or an induction. I was induced so there wasn't really much position changing since I was hooked up to the machines. I also wore the gown they give. The one nice part was that I was allowed to have as much water as I wanted, even though I had the epi. I was so thirsty!

That's awesome about the water! I was induced last time with my dd. How long over your due date will they let you go and is that when they will give you an internal to see if you're dilated at all?

I was actually 38 weeks when I was induced. My blood pressure was slightly elevated. The midwives consulted with the ob's in the practice and were told to do an internal. They said if I was 2-3 cm and showing progress, to send me to the hospital. Well I was 2 cm, so off the hospital I went and had ds the next day. I think if you are overdue they would do an internal to check things.
