Yep saw that on facebook. Why arent the news reporters doing a story on this and asking the town what is going on?

Yes, I'm furious with the Town of Huntington.

We had a plow show up at 4pm & spent 15-20 minutes on our street, making barely a single lane. My husband did a 1/4 of our street.

The side roads are a complete mess. Not one plow was out today plowing. Now in addition to missing a day of school, the schools have a 2 hour delay tomorrow. Unless the snow melts tonight, am I supposed to have my kid waiting in slush & ice patches for a bus?

They did a terrific job during Sandy. Truly amazing. All of that good well is gone after this storm. I understand it was 3 feet of snow but why weren't they out today? They shouldn't even pay the guy that plowed our street.

News 12 said they called the SC executive all day today and offered for him to appear on their broadcast, but his people said he was unavailable each time they called. (sorry can't quote) or maybe they said the Brookhaven town supervisor, I can't recall now, but the anchor even seemed annoyed.

I heard that too and they are backpedaling with the 5pm Sunday deadline. They didnt realize how many roads were not done. Come on. I am in Islip and the roads are horrendous there too. I habe friends and family that have not been plowed out in Islip and Brookhaven. If they are done with the LIE, where are they? Everytime you see a truck, it has its plow up. I saw one just parked on vets highway today. The only time you see them actually working is on TV.

Re: Do we have a right to be mad about the lack of plowing

An article in Newsday quoted the Islip town supervisor as saying that some 200 privately owned plow trucks contracted they had contracted had broken down which left a lot of the streets unplowed until Sunday.

Sometimes the best laid plans don't pan out - double the amount of snow expected, starting sooner and coming down heavier and faster than predicted, then your contractors' equipment starts breaking down. It all added up - once you have 2+ feet of snow to move all at once you need a different breed of equipment.

And if you're going to say we pay high taxes just remember, most of those high taxes go to the school budget, not the towns.

I certainly think we have a right to be mad.
My niece was discharged from the hospital on Saturday but nobody was able to pick her up because of the condition of the roads. Her mother and step father had to dig out their street today and took a chance to get there TODAY to pick her up.
And forget about the condition of the roads in front of the hospital. Nothings been clear. I'm telling you. This is a law suit waiting to happen.

And has anyone seen this from Brookhaven

Romaine out of town during blizzard

Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine has been out of town on vacation since Wednesday, his spokesman Jack Krieger confirmed for Patch.

His exact location is unknown. Also unknown is who Romaine, a Republican, has been communicating with during and after the storm. It is also not known whether Romaine attempted to return to Long Island prior to or after the storm, and if he was even able to do so.

Councilman Steve Fiore-Rosenfeld and Councilwoman Kathy Walsh both said they have not seen or heard from Romaine during the blizzard or afterwards - and say it is having an impact on cleanup across Brookhaven.

“It does have an impact when the leader of a township who has the authority to take command of all departments, and marshal all forces and resources is not at Town Hall,” said Fiore-Rosenfeld, a Democrat. “Clearly, his lack of presence at the helm is not helpful to our ability to respond to residents and their concerns about being snowed in and trapped in their homes.”

The councilman on Sunday wrote a scathing letter to Romaine and acting Highway Superintendent Michael Murphy calling it a "a complete and systematic breakdown in the ability of the Town Highway Department to respond to this crisis."

Walsh, who said she spent the weekend answering calls from residents at the Town's Emergency Operations Center, said many roads in her council district had not gotten a first pass from snowplows as of 4:30 p.m. Sunday, and she could not provide an answer as to why that was.

“Unfortunately, there hasn’t been a whole lot of information shared and I’m just as frustrated as residents,” Walsh said.

Councilman Daniel Panico, who was named deputy supervisor in January replacing Walsh, has been running the town in Romaine's absence.

“Dan Panico has been very helpful," Fiore-Rosenfeld said. "He’s new on the job and is doing the best he can, but he’s not the supervisor or superintendent of highways.”

Panico has not responded to multiple calls from Patch since Saturday afternoon.

Murphy has reportedly been out on a medical leave of absence during the storm, according to Walsh. Like Panico, he is newly appointed to that position following the resignation of John Rouse in January.

This leaves Town Board members asking who is in control of the Highway Department during this crisis.

“I want to praise the average highway worker, who in the last two to three days has in some cases only gotten two hours of sleep,” Fiore-Rosenfeld said. “If people in my neighborhood haven’t gotten their streets plowed, it’s not their fault. It’s the lack of leadership in Town.”

Re: Do we have a right to be mad about the lack of plowing

I feel really bad for all of those who haven't been plowed. I live in an incorporated village and the difference from where the village ends and the town begins is so obvious in terms of road conditions. Thankfully, in my neighborhood we had plows coming by every hour during the storm all night long and I assumed it was like that everywhere.

So yes, in my opinion, people have a right to be angry. This is not Georgia where it seldom snows, this is NY where snow storms in winter are a fact of life and it is shocking to me that they aren't better prepared.

Re: Do we have a right to be mad about the lack of plowing

My hubbys job is located at exit 63. He went in on Sunday to plow the yard. Honestly, I thought it was bs that snow wasn't plowed but after hearing his story about what he went through, I say that the equipment wasn't enough to handle all the snow. He had a mack truck type of plow. A huge monstrosity. It kept getting stuck over and over again. A huge yard took his almost 8 hours to plow.

There are still streets that have not been touched by a plow. Unacceptable. Their equipment was not out when it should have been, period. They are 100% to blame that our children still cannot go to school, and people cannot go to work.

and not one news conference about this from the town of Brookhaven.. Their management should be ashamed.

Islip no better. Roads are horrendous. Very scary and no plows out to plow or sand last night.

Re: Do we have a right to be mad about the lack of plowing

Town of Islip here. Neighbor called and they told her all the people they hired quit because the snow was too much for them to handle. I had a payloader come down my street twice, but just rode straight through. The first plow came yesterday.

Before this storm everyone kept saying why is everyone panicking, we can do snow. Well snow came and people were trapped not just a day or two but three days now and some going on their fourth day. One neighbor needed meds for her child who has epilepsey and can't get off our block yet alone anywhere beyond that.

Unacceptable. I remember very clearly when storms happened like this, the trucks were out within the hour of snow falling. These trucks didn't get going til the snow stop. Well duh, yeah you are going to get stuck.

Another story on Brookhaven

The acting Highway Superintendent Michael Murphy has been out on a medical leave of absence during the storm.

I saw a report yesterday that it was a "toothache". It seems someone is trying to make a statement since

Sorry. But to have both of them out of office at the time this is happening and having these results. Shows something is wrong with the way it was handled.

As for the roads being closed, here is what the governor had to say about it:

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo rejected other suggestions that the highway should have been closed before the storm. "By the weather reports we had, there was no reason for the roads to be closed," he said in a news conference Monday.

This was copied from Newsday.

They also dont work non stop for days as they all claim. They let them go home for hours (which is fine as everyone needs a break and sleep) but.....there is no back up so no plows out on the roads.

Re: Do we have a right to be mad about the lack of plowing

Everyone in suffolk has a right to be mad about this, today is tuesday and homeowners roads are still not plowed yet. It is so unacceptable. Long Islanders pay an extreme amount of taxes and we have had snow of this magnitude before. It really is a disgrace and the fact nothing is being done and people are getting the run around is awful.

Re: Do we have a right to be mad about the lack of plowing

I think that there are a few issues that came into play with this situation...

1. This was a VERY serious storm that dumped almost 3 feet of snow on the Town of Brookhaven.

2. Your elected Highway Superintendant is out SICK and your elected Town Supervisor is out on VACATION!! .. Yes that's right fokes, even though he knew the storm was coming he still decided to leave town on wednesday for a much needed Vacation Chat Icon

3. I do know in my neighborhood even my street my roads were not plowed at all on Saturday so myself, my STBDH and ALL of our neighbors that were physically capable of doing so got out there with our shovels and snowblowers and did our own street...

I think that the towns , Counties and State are doing the best they can with the amount of snow that we got ... Is it frustrating, yes , but for gods sake instead of sitting here behind a computer complaining .. Grab a shovel or your snow blower and start doing something about it !!!!!!!!

I don't see why this is a resident's responsibility frankly. You pay taxes for these types of services and never before has this ever been an issue. They messed up- they didnt get out ahead of the storm, to salt, sand or even try and stay on top of it- they waited till it was over and then tried to plow. I'm in Queens, we had trucks running through literally hourly- all night Friday and all morning Saturday. Yes, we got significantly less, but they stayed on top of it the whole time.

People in Suffolk have ever right to be angry about the lack of service during this storm.

^ oh please. Im expected to go out and shovel my long ass curvy block. I pay a lot in taxes, this should have been done. I saw one plow friday afternoon when it started, another got stuck sat morning, never returned. I finally had one ********* come yesterday, who barely had his plow down. I still have a good foot of snow on my block. I live in a curvy neighborhood. They never plowed the curves in the road. Maybe if this schumk didnt go on vacation, or his partner did call in sick something would have been done. You are incharge of a community, and you go on vacation NOW? You call in sick?? Get your ass back to work and clear this shit off my street. So no, I dont feel bad for them, and NO I dont think they are doing all they can. This is complete crap.

Exactly.
Maybe we should all just start deducting money off our next tax bills.
Hmmm- let's see. You spent 6 hours shoveling your own freaking street- how much is your time worth an hour? $25? more?
Should we send the town a bill?
Or maybe hire a private company to plow our street and deduct the bill from the next tax payment.
Get the eff out of here.
They are never short staffed when it comes to sending out those tax bills.
They are SUPER efficient in collecting all monies due to them that is for sure!
They don't miss a beat there.
There is no excuse.
