Smithhaven Mall Evacuated
From Sachem Patch:
UPDATE 3:50 p.m.: The “Lifestyle Wing” of the Smith Haven Mall has been evacuated due to compromised tresses of the roof from the melting snow and water, which created instability, according to the Assistant Chief Keane of the Nesconset Fire Department.
"Conditions are causing a weaking of the roofing system," said Keane who was requesting for an inspection of the entire mall roof. Mulitple fire dpeartments were on the scene including Nesconset, Stony Brook, St. James, Hauppauge and Commack.
Mall employees were seen carrying bucket loads of water out of Lifestye Wing entrance and dumping them outside.
A representative of the Smith Haven Mall said the interior mall stores of the lifestyle wing are closed for the rest of the day but the outside stores are still open.
The Nesconset assistant chief said there were no injuries following the leaks.
-----
Original Story: Roof leaks at the Smith Haven Mall have caused one store to close and others working around the leaks.
According to a representative of the Smith Haven Mall, New York & Company is currently closed due to roof leaks that customers cannot shop around and making conditions unable to be worked around. The mall representative also said there is no flooding in there is no evacuation of the mall.
A firefighter at the scene said there is a partial roof collapse at New York & Company.

Re: Smithhaven Mall Evacuated
I was just in Toyrus (holbrook) and the roof is leaking every where. They have whole aisles closed. I said to my mom we should get out of here. It can't be safe that the roof is leaking all over the place.

Re: Smithhaven Mall Evacuated
I was just at Marshall's/Home Good in Stony Brook and same thing. ENtire ceiling tiles were so wet they had just fallen out of the ceiling.
Makes me wary to enter any building honestly

Why are people out galavanting at the stores when roads are still treacherous?

Re: Smithhaven Mall Evacuated
Shortly before I left work today I heard a steadily growing drip-drip-drip overhead in my office. We've had roof leaks in the warehouse and lunchroom before when it's rained but lately it seemed to have been fixed.
I called maintenance then started moving stuff off my desk. Called again as it got louder and they said they had several leaks and can't do anything about it. They did send someone over to put buckets on the desk and I moved as much as possible and covered things with bags (monitor, keyboard, etc.)
I really wonder what I'll find when I come in tomorrow morning.

Thank God they were able to get everyone on!
I read a facebook friend's status that said this happened at a gym too...I'm not sure which one it was though.

Re: Smithhaven Mall Evacuated
I'm scared because we have several leaks in my office building that has a flat ranch style roof. Building super swears up and down that it will not collapse. I don't know. I'm kind of freaking out! Good think they evacuated the mall. This is something to be taken seriously.
