is it rude if a family member asks for the receipt so they can exchange the duplicate item?

I rarely get upset with people so if you asked me, I would be happy to give it to you :)
I think I would decide based on my relationship with the family member. I really don't think its rude at all, especially if you act thankful for the gift.

If its a duplicate I would say no. Why would they need two of something...I tend to always give gift receipts now to avoid this. Makes my life easier

I think it depends on your relationship. Overall, I think it's rude to ask anyone.

Not rude if it's a duplicate, semi-rude of it's something that you just don't want.

If you like the family member, it's ok. If it's your obnoxious cousin, or basically any IL, it's rude Chat Icon

Completly disagree. How would YOU feel in the same situation? Would want to keep something, throw it away? give it away because its a duplicate?

My thinking is I would want someone to enjoy the gift. All the better that it was SO good that they already have one (means you nialed it). Let them exchnage for something else they CAN use.

I gave a gift to a friend's child. It was a bath toy. When we opened it she was so happy but said "its so awesome we have it". I gave her the recipt without a second thought.

I think it's different to ask a family member but, I usually don't - I return the item without (it's usually something from Carters) or regift (if it's a toy).

ITA!

When you give a gift, it's intended for that kid. Some say to regift it, but then the kid misses out on a toy and how is that fair? Or it gets thrown out. Is that how you want your $$ spent because i don't.

But then again, this said family member didn't buy the gift. They took a gift from another family member and regifted it to another family member in the same family. Chat Icon That to me is rude, effortless and completely thoughtless.

rules of regifting: 1- put post its on the gift to let you know who it's from and 2- think about who you're giving it to.

You only think it's rude because you got caught!!!!

I disagree, but it depends on who it came from.

If I buy something for my nieces/nephews/close friends, I want the kids to ENJOY it. thats the point of the gift! If something needs to be exchanged, I see no issue with it. Id rather not have my gift collect dust or be re-gifted.

No.

That's what they make gift receipts FOR.

Sometimes, I order online & an item comes without a gift receipt, but I have an online copy. In that case, I tell the parents to PLEASE ask if their kid can't use the gift.

If it IS the thought that counts, re-gifting is totally tacky! (No thought involved).

I know people DO it... but it doesn't make it right.

A family member is family. There REALLY should be thought there (unless it was being "donated" like: "my son is done with these spoons/toys/chairs, can your son use them?").

Still the same thing, it's about spending time/celebrating not the gift really. It's rude family/friend doesn't matter. You never know the gift-giving situation. So that said to put someone on the spot is rude for sure. I would never do that, personally. If you knew it's a regift why would you ask? You say they were caught? Sounds malicious and not coming from good intentions at all. Are you sure it's regifted? Sounds like a personal issue not so much about celebrating or the gift.

Not rude at all. Why should the child miss out on a gift because it is perceived as rude to ask for a receipt? I, personally, think that re-gifting is rude. When you re-gift, you obviously can't give a gift receipt, so that person is basically out of luck if they already have that item. How is that right? I'm not talking about if the person just doesn't like the item, but if the gift receiver already has the item, why shouldn't they be entitled to a replacement gift? I just don't see the logic.

drama i don't have time for, nor am i going to create a fake name about it when i know the other person frequents LIF. I guess she thinks i'm THAT stupid.

Life's too short for this b.s. If she wants to hold on to this, go for it.

I actually thought it was slightly funny when i found out after i asked her, but now i'm just hurt. Clearly she doesn't want to own up to it, so be it.

This is petty. I'm done. You should have just talked to me about it as an adult instead of putting it on a public forum for me to see.

Spinoff... to is it rude post...

Personally as a gifter, I would find it more rude to learn that someone I gave something to already had it and did not want to say anything. I would be hurt if I found out the gift was donated/regifted/cast to the side. I would be more than happy to supply the receipt. Heck, I would take the child to the store and let them pick out what they want. (BTDT)

As the gift giver, I rather the parent return the duplicate and get their a DC a toy they would actually enjoy instead of just throwing it in the trash or leaving it in the basement somewhere!

Re: Spinoff... to is it rude post...

I don't think so. I would like for the person or child to be able to get something they want or could use instead of a gift going to waste. My aunt bought an outfit for DS for Christmas. He already had it. I wasn't going to say anything but DS was wearing the same outfit in his christmas card picture so my aunt took the outfit back and bought him something different. I thought it was very nice. i told her I would take it back but she said she didn't have the receipt with her so she woul;d send the new outfit.

Re: Spinoff... to is it rude post...

I don't know, why is it rude? Duplicates happen. I know when I spend my hard earned money on a gift I hope it's something the person can use. If they already have it or if it is the wrong size or whatever the reason I am okay with them exchanging my gift for something they could use. It doesn't mean your unappreciative, at least not IMO. I would rather someone ask me for the receipt and make the exchange then just toss my gift to the closet or give it away. What a waste.

That being said, with family..........I would most definitely ask for the gift receipt in a very nice way while letting them know how appreciative I am for the gift despite the need for the exchange. Chat Icon
