Re: Did anyone NOT do the 12 months bloodwork?
I didn't want to do it but glad I did with DD because she ended up being borderline anemic. I never would have known if I didin't do the bloodwork. She did cry but mostly because she didn't want to be held down. Same with DS - he started crying the second we held him down, but he stopped crying while they were still drawing the blood and was just hanging out while they finished.
eta - we went to the lab at Good Sam. The phlebotomist who did it was AMAZING. I complimented her and she told me they always make her do the babies.

Re: Did anyone NOT do the 12 months bloodwork?
Our house was built in the 1950's and I really wanted to make sure she didn't have high levels of lead.
They took the blood from DD's finger, and then had to squeeze it for a few minutes to get enough blood. She definitely wasn't happy, but I held her and hugged her and when it was over and she had her toys back she was fine pretty quickly.

DS is 19 months and the only bloodwork he has had was whatever was done at birth.

Re: Did anyone NOT do the 12 months bloodwork?
We had it done and you're right.......it was not a finger prick. I had to bring DD to the lab and they took a few vials of blood from her arm. It was horrible, she was terrified and screaming the whole time.

Re: Did anyone NOT do the 12 months bloodwork?
My DS had blood drawn and 1 year and 2 year ~ I wanted to make sure everything was ok and plus check the lead level. Plus my son was a trooper ~ He did great both times! I was more of a wreck than he was!

Re: Did anyone NOT do the 12 months bloodwork?
My dr doesn't do that at 12 months. He only did the prick in the finger to test lead levels as per state. I don't feel it is necessary unless you have a reason. I'm not sure what age they do the "big" blood test.

Skipped it for both of my DDs and took them at 2. I did take my DS at 12 months, mostly to confirm his egg allergy.

Re: Did anyone NOT do the 12 months bloodwork?
2.5 years ago my dr's office sent us to the lab for actual blood work, starting 1.5 years ago we were able to do the blood work in the office. They prick the finger and use the straw to get enough blood to run I think about 5 tests. Based on those tests we were able to find a rare disease that the DD had that she had no signs of. So i would highly recommend having it done.

Re: Did anyone NOT do the 12 months bloodwork?
Due to the high levels of Lead in the NY area, yes I did mine... while in Texas.
it is not required or necessary here. We don't have that kind of exposure here. But given her exposure to lead in NY it was just given she'd have it done.
In our case it was pretty much a pin prick tho.
Reading the responses, it seems I too 'skipped' major blood work. She's 4 and has never had blood drawn.

Re: Did anyone NOT do the 12 months bloodwork?
I did it. Honestly it sucked bc they literally had to restrain him and he screamed like a madman BUT after that he was totally fine, like 2 minutes later, unlike a shot where they sometimes get cranky for part or all fo the day.
I would have personally been to nervous not to do it.

Re: Did anyone NOT do the 12 months bloodwork?
I did have my first DS tested and will have #2 tested as well. Believe me, I don't enjoy seeing my kids in pain but I also think that the testing is important and I can not spare them from all pain in this life anyway. Maybe it's important to me bc we were shocked when my relative's son was found to have dangerous lead levels. It's nothing to skip bc your baby will be in temporary pain in my opinion.

Re: Did anyone NOT do the 12 months bloodwork?
We did it at 12 months. The nurse who drew his blood was so great, DS didn't even feel the needle go in! He was too busy giggling and watching his blood fill into the vial.
It was harder on me than him, but isn't that most things with parenting?
