Teacher from DS school died

I got an email sent from the school principal that their full time substitute teacher had died, as well as her unborn child. Chat Icon There were no more details. I kind of assumed a car accident. Today I heard, and then looked up, some more details to the story. Apparently she had just gotten word that something was very wrong with the baby- brain damage, seizures, something like that. So at 33 weeks, she went to a controversial clinic in MD for a late term abortion. And she and the baby died due to complications.Chat Icon I just don't know how to process this, nor how to explain it to DS. He gets that older people die, but not necessarily why/how someone so young dies.

Wow that is horrible. Incredibly sad. When things have happened in my DDs' schools or in the news they send an email with suggestions on what to say and how to your child. Will it be addressed at school?

Re: Teacher from DS school died

The principal told them all at morning announcements and sent home a letter asking the kids to make two hearts on her behalf- one red for love, the other purple for the school's color. I don't know how much more its been discussed.

Can you let your DC take the lead and just let him talk? This way you don't add anything but gives you an idea of what he knows or was told.

Etd to add I'm sure they wouldn't have given details but just a general idea that she passed away from unfortunate circumstances.

Teacher from DS school died

I wanted to add that the librarian at my child's school passed away a couple of weeks ago. He had been out sick for a while. I told her that he was sick and went to heaven, because I didn't want her to hear it from someone else. She wanted to write him a little note, and send it up to heaven with a balloon. So that is what we did one day.

Re: Teacher from DS school died

I went through this when my daughter was 7. Her teacher, a 47 year old man, had a massive coronary over a weekend. Basically, the kids came back to school on Monday and he was gone. The school provided grief counselors and the principal was a daily presence in the classroom.

The school, in my opinion, handled it as well as possible. The kids had various activities/projects designed to help manage grief. In addition, the teacher's family visited the class and shard memories with them.

From my perspective , I was focused on making my daughter's life as normal as possible. The kids really just wanted to know that everything was going to be ok. I repeatedly told my daughter how unusual it is for a 47 year old to die. That seemed to be what she needed to hear.

Good luck. Your son will show you what he needs.

Re: Teacher from DS school died

**Totally crashing**

Just wanted to add that I lost my favorite home-economics teacher while in school due to breast cancer. I remember being sad but making letters/notes to her about my favorite times. We made a wall with all of our notes in school.

I would think out of site, out of mind. DS is in preschool, teachers come and go and he doesn't blink an eye. Not to sound cold, but if you don't make a big deal, i don't think it will be an issue for him.

I am sorry for you loss

Re: Teacher from DS school died

When I was in 2nd grade, the teacher I'd had for 1st grade died. My parents were honest with me and told me what happened. The school allowed the students the day off to attend the funeral and our parents brought us.
She was a wonderful teacher, and I'll always remember her. I wouldn't go into the details of what happened....but I would certainly talk to him about it.

I work in this district and it is very sad. Many of her friends and family members also work/have worked in the district. I love the idea of the two hearts. It is absolutely tragic as all details have not been released.
