Those who use MFP...

What is your Sugar goal? Do you include natural sugars in your count?MFP puts my sugar limitation at 25mg. I usually can do it limiting both added sugars and natural sugars, but I find myself obsessing about it, especially because I want to eat more fruit for the nutritional value but with the gram here and gram there in all the other stuff I eat (veggies, etc), an apple puts me over the edge by a lot. Then i read its more about glycemic index than grams of sugar so maybe I should just eat the damn apple! I usually stay under carbs, over my protein and just under fat but then am also under calories so I find that I am eating a 250 cal snack at 930pm to get the calories in but if I ate a piece a fruit here or there during the day, I wouldn't be stuck with so many calories to eat at night. I already bring a string cheese, carrots/cucumber and almonds for snacks during the day but I don't know what else to bring that I can have on the go that isn't fruit. Thoughts? I'm not sure if my ramble make sense but it just feels like to fix one problem I cause another.

At least we can commiserate! Im thinking about taking a week and eating more fruit while still watching my calories and see what happens. I lost 7 lbs already since Jan 1 (with one week hiatus for vacation) so it is a steady 1 lb per week. Im ok with that since I don't have a ton to lose but I want to lose about 5 more and I need to do it by Memorial Day weekend for my wedding so I don't want to "waste" time and screw it up because I ate a freaking apple!Chat Icon

I have heard that you really shouldn't worry about your natural sugar intake, unless you have a special health concern, as long as you're meeting your macro goals. I try and really limit added sugars, but I don't track sugar itself because I don't feel my body gets enough fruit when I'm focused on keeping my total sugar intake down.

eat an apple- the fiber alone is worth it- along with so many other benefits

I am so over these apps- they are useless in my opinion- natural sugar from fruit is not the same as eating 2 cookies

I agree with everyone - I am really suspect of any eating plan that says you can't have fruit or need to severely limit it. Which is why I wouldn't want to do something like Adkins.

I was doing MFP over the summer, and I did lose a few lbs during the couple of months I was doing it (like 6 lbs), but it was slow, and I was also doing the couch-to-5K program at the time. I just always struggled with how to set my target for calories and various nutrients.

After gaining my 6 lbs back through the storm and the holidays, I rejoined WW in January and have lost almost 13 lbs (and I am not working out). It's just a simpler for me. On WW, I eat a lot of fruit. I don't gorge myself on it, but I probably eat 3 to 5 servings a day (counting a serving as a 1/2 cup, so a large apple or banana would be 2 servings). I snack on fruit often, and have it with meals, and I don't think it's hindered my weight loss. On the contrary, I think it helps, and is a healthy way to eat, too, even though fruit is of course not calorie free and does have sugar.

I just read "In Defense of Food" by Michael Pollan for my book club, and his whole point was to avoid the "nutritionist" way of thinking, which is to focus on individual macronutrients. He argues that we should eat a more plant based diet and watch portions, and not focus on isolating specific nutrients to eat or avoid. He says it's as simple as eating real food, not too much, mostly plants! I didn't agree with everything in the book, but it was a thought provoking read...
