One month ago today...
we lost our baby girl Olivia Grace...I dont want anyone else to suffer a loss like we did due to cervical incompetence so I want to spread the word...
Cervical incompetence is a medical condition in which a pregnant woman's cervix begins to dilate (widen) and efface (thin) before her pregnancy has reached term. Cervical incompetence may cause miscarriage or preterm birth during the second and third trimesters.
In a woman with cervical incompetence, dilation and effacement of the cervix may occur without pain or uterine contractions. IC is usually seen between 18-24 weeks of pregnancy.
In a normal pregnancy, dilation and effacement occurs in response to uterine contractions. Cervical incompetence occurs because of weakness of the cervix, which is made to open by the growing pressure in the uterus as pregnancy progresses. If the responses are not halted, rupture of the membranes and birth of a premature baby can result.
Please talk to your doctor and ask for your cervix to be monitored more closely if you have risk factors which includes:
Congenital conditions. Uterine abnormalities and genetic disorders affecting a fibrous type of protein that makes up your body's connective tissues (collagen) might cause an incompetent cervix. Exposure to diethylstilbestrol (DES), a synthetic form of the hormone estrogen, before birth also has been linked to cervical insufficiency.
Obstetric trauma. If you experienced a cervical tear during a previous labor and delivery, you could have an incompetent cervix.
Certain cervical procedures. Various surgical procedures — including a procedure used to take a sample of cervical tissue (cervical biopsy) and a treatment that uses an electrical current to remove diseased tissue from the cervix (loop electrosurgical excision procedure, or LEEP) — can contribute to cervical insufficiency.
Dilation and curettage (D&C). This procedure is used to diagnose or treat various uterine conditions — such as heavy bleeding — or to clear the uterine lining after a miscarriage or abortion. It can cause structural damage to the cervix.
Some women are just born with a weak cervix and they will not know they have an issue until its too late Not to scare anyone but just because you have a risk factor does not mean you will have IC...I had risk factors and if I would have known I would have made sure to be extra vigilant but even with that doesnt mean we would have caught the problem in time to not lose our daughter.
Please be your own advocate and go with your gut...One loss due to IC is too many...
