Seeking Specialist in rape victims
Hi. I am looking for a recommendation in finding a social worker or psychologist that specializes in rape victims. I am hoping for someone that takes a homeopathic route. I don't want the person to recommend medication. Please help. A family member is severely scarred from her experience.

Re: Seeking Specialist in rape victims
Maybe try calling this organization:
Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network (RAINN) - Sexual Assault Hotline
(800) 656 - HOPE(4673) National Hotline
Note: I'm a social worker (although not with this population), however, I can tell you for a fact that social workers/psychologists do not prescribe meds.
It's also generally a process to go on any kind of med and any good social worker or psychologist will always tell the person to start by having a conversation with their doctor over anything they may want to put in their body. Prescribed or not.
I've also worked with plenty of people over the years who I felt should be on some kind of med, but that's not up to me to decide.
I usually point this out as a potential form of assistance if I am concerned about their overall health, safety, and ability to remain in the community.

Re: Seeking Specialist in rape victims
Here's another potential resource:
Victims Information Bureau of Suffolk (VIBS)
(631) 360 - 3606 24-hour hotline
http://www.vibs.org
Non-profit agency providing victims of child abuse, sexual assault/rape, domestic violence and elder abuse with counseling, emergency room support, legal advocacy, referrals and entitlement assistance; also provides counseling groups for offenders.

Re: Seeking Specialist in rape victims
Look into EFT... Emotional Freedom Technique..... It sounds whacky but My daughter had a major accident this past summer and I was severely traumatized and worked with a therapist using this method and the results were incredible. There is an incredible doctor working with the families from the Sandy Hook Shooting in our town helping them recover from the trauma using this technique.
I just did a quick google search and you might be able to find a provider through here

Re: Seeking Specialist in rape victims
I am assuming that she is looking for help for PTSD symptoms related to the rape. The most effective treatment as proven by the research is imaginal exposure, a form of cognitive behavioral therapy. You could also try CBT without the imaginal exposure. The other techniques (EFT) is not an empirically validated technique and should not be used.

Re: Seeking Specialist in rape victims
Good luck to her.
IMO, the most important thing is that she needs to find a therapist she feels comfortable with.
I would probably start with the resources who specialize in her issue and go from there.
Arguing about what is the best style of therapy serves no purpose IMO.
Well, it does, but not the victim's.

Re: Seeking Specialist in rape victims
Nassau County Coalition against domestic violence in Bethpage is an excellent resource I agree with a previous poster that type of treatment should be secondary to finding a good therapist and building a close, trusting relationship. Please know your friends recovery will not be fixed or complete within a set timeframe - the physical wounds heal quickly but the psychological wounds linger and need to be addressed appropriately so the victim can process the rape and learn to cope with its effects on her everyday life and everyday relationships. God bless your friend

Re: Seeking Specialist in rape victims
I think therapy in all the forms mentioned above could all be options for sure. You said homeopathic... I do homeopathy and if you want a recommendation for one I can give it to you. It is another piece of healing in conjunction with everything else that this person might choose to do.
My best wishes to this person and the road of healing she is on.

Re: Seeking Specialist in rape victims
Your homeopathic doctors are probably a better fit since she can see them in person if she lives in the area.
I used to work with Dr. Pearlyn Goodman-Herrick. I met her in NY, but ended up working with her over the phone when she moved to CA.
I am transitioning to Dr.Sadhana Thakkar, also located in CA. My family has worked with her and had tremendous success.
