Dog dumped at pound with another dog AFTER 7 years, reason? NEW BABY. You couldn't find a rescue? Just the pound? Where your dogs are going to be killed in a few hours?

The dog got there 3/5 and he will die this am if no rescue takes him.

Despite the behavior rating he looks like an angel. When these dogs are thrown into an unknown situation (and some people feel the dogs smell death and understand what happens there) of course they are going to have behavior issues.

It is incomprehensible to me that any dog owner could do this. I hope someone saves this sweet boy.

so sad:( these dogs are dumped repeatedly after babies are born, or when the dog gets old, or when diagnosed w/an illness or when people move

I could never do this to my pups-they are my heart and soul

I want my kids to grow up w/them

I want to take care of them when they get sick and old

I would never move w/o them

I would never ever do this and I can't believe it happens so very often :(

OK, I hate defending people who do this but sometimes I wonder if maybe they DID try other things. Not all rescues are responsive or willing to take an animal out of a home, most are stretched pretty thin and can't. They'll pull animals from kill shelters, but not from homes. We went through it with a cat we had. Called every single rescue organization on LI, couldn't even get a courtesy listing on petfinder. (And please, we tried with this cat. For almost a year and a half we tried every thing that was recommended) And, I get it, they get a ton of emails and calls about animals to rescue every day. The list of those we did hear back from is less than you can count on your fingers. We begged, pleaded for any help rehoming the cat and got zero help. So, we were left with two options: shelter or craigslist. Well, we didn't go with craigslist because animal people put the fear of God into us about dogfighters using CL animals for baiting reasons. So, the cat ended up in a shelter because we had really run out of time. She was there less than a week, because SUDDENLY the rescue we originally worked with to adopt her cared about her again.

But it just always isn't that easy to say "just call a rescue".

Oh and the "reason" the shelter gave to people who asked why we gave the cat to them? The reason that was listed on the Petfinder profile?

You guessed it:

New baby came and owners didn't want the hair on the baby's things.

What reason was actually given to them? Cat was being bullied by other two cats and needs to be an only cat/animal in the home. She had stopped grooming herself, was not being allowed into the litterbox the other two, causing accidents. She had become fearful and had started biting/scratching. And yes, we DID have a baby but she certainly wasn't new. And, out of our 3 cats she was the least shedder. We kept the other two shedding beasts, and still have them, one will turn 12 this year. I still miss her like crazy, she was an amazing cat when we adopted her (as an adult). But after a year and a half of being tormented by the other two, she had become fearful, aggressive, and depressed. She had gone from 24lbs (normal weight, she was a Norwegian Forest Cat) down to 19lbs. She wasn't the same lovebug that she was when she was adopted. She was sweet and gentle and had become ornery and would swipe/bite out of fearfulness. Sorry, but that is no life to live in constant fear. And sorry, I couldn't have my child accidentally crawling in pee puddles or eating poop or even the vomit from this cat. My child didn't deserve to be scratched or bitten because we refused to do right by the cat and get her into a home where she would thrive. Sometimes the best thing for all involved is to rehome the anima, but it's a shame that rescues and animal activists make people feel so g'danged guilty when things don't work out. It's a shame that there aren't more resources available to help rehome animals other than craigslist or pennysaver (which you're constantly warned about because of dogfighters, labs, and abusers.........)

So, I don't judge the people that drop their animals off. I don't know what they already tried or what the real reason is. Maybe it's more than a "new baby" but maybe they foolishly think that reason will help the animal become adopted easier than if they give the real reasons.

It is BS and believe me, it wasn't for a lack of effort that we turned the cat over to a shelter, it really was our last resort but when you have doors slamming in your face from all the "reputable" shelters you can find, what options are you left with? (And, I might add, this was pre social media really being an effective networking tool for this type of thing)

I'm not saying that there aren't people out there that are heartless and treat their animals like they're disposable because there certainly are.

But (especially given the problems at NYCACC) I just wanted to point out how a situation can be very easily twisted around by shelter staff who think that it is easier to put "new baby" down. And in this particular instance, reading what was put on the turn in sheet doesn't match the "new baby" reason given on Urgent (it says financial on the profile)

Some pets really shouldn't stay in a home where they are no longer wanted or are not thriving. Unfortunately the ratio of homes to unwanted pets is pretty bad. Which is why hundreds of pets are put down every day.

I know what you are saying Tara, it's like the more heart wrenching the story, the more likely the pet is going to be adopted. Meanwhile so many young healthy, normal temperament dogs with a so so story will get put down but an aging senior dog with tumors all over it's body, a dog that had a rough past or a dog with questionable temperament might be saved instead.

I guess in the interest of finding your pet that didn't work out a home you took one for the team and got made out to be the bad guy. :o)
