Where to begin? breeders and rescue orgs?
My mom had a german shepherd years ago, the breed was always special to her. Over the years she has had pits but recently she has been talking about getting another shepherd. She is looking for a pure bread, either through a breeder or a rescue org. Can anyone offer any advice on how to find a breeder or search the rescues? She would like the dog to be under a year and must be able to get along with other dogs (she has another rescue) and my DD who is still small. We have had mixed breeds before, so I have a feeling if she found the right dog she wouldn't care too much if it wasn't pure Shepherd. Thanks for any advice you can offer!

I would start on Petfinder and pick shepherd as the breed. There will likely be some GSD rescues on there

I agree rescues GSD's are very popular and people are giving them up all the time. there will likely be many purebreds for rescue.

We've been checking out Petfinder. DH wants to get another German Shepherd. There is a beauty named Lucky on the site. If I didn't have 2 dogs already, Lucky would be here with us.

You could also check North Shore Animal League, craigslist, and possibly even search on facebook. Many rescues have facebook pages these days.
