Has anyone ever been tested for epilepsy?/Neurologist recommendation in Manhattan, Queens or Brooklyn

What is the test like?

I have to find a neurologist and get the test done. Chat Icon If you know of a good neurologist in NYC, Queens or Brooklyn, I'd love a recommendation.

Thanks!

My son is an epileptic.

The initial test was a basic VEEG. They put wires all over his head and monitored his brain activity for about an hour. During that time they would sometimes flash lights at him at different frequencies (fast/slow). They studied the results and it showed some atypical activity but they wanted to be certain so they scheduled a 2 day monitoring in the hospital. He wore a backpack with the recording device and wires on his head secured with gauze and just went about his business. (removed pic since you've seen it now!). THey only needed one day to determine that he had significant centrotemporal spiking in the rolandic region of his brain - and they diagnosed him with BRE. It also allowed them to see how significant the spiking was which helped them determine a recommendation for medication.

Prior to the VEEG (and on every subsequent visit to the neurologist), they also do some basic stuff.. stand up, walk on your toes, touch your nose, follow my fingers, walk on your heels, do you feel this, can you feel that.. etc.. They also check reflexes, look into his eyes, ears and throat and that's about it.

I love Robbie's team of neurologists.. but they are pediatric so I couldn't really recommend them to you as an adult.

But the point is.. the testing was completely non-invasive and didn't hurt (except when they had to 'unglue' the tabs from his head.

GOOD LUCK!!Chat Icon

I can't help with what the test is like but I can make recommendations for two places. I don't know if you remember that I dealt with cluster headaches and saw some GREAT doctors. My neurologist is Dr. Ostrovsky (sp?). He is part of Neurologists Associates and on Marcus Ave right off the Northern State in New Hyde Park. My neurosurgeon's office specialized in epilepsy. There were signs and booklets all over the office. They were located on Northern Blvd just east of Lakeville Road. My doctor's name was Dr. Mehta. I know it's not NYC, Queens, or Brooklyn but both places are on the Queens/Nassau boarder and the best recommendations I could make. Good luck Kris!

My husband has epilepsy and we have seen many doctors - I would recommend Dr. Pacia at NYU or Dr. Pak at Columbia presybyterian. If you are willing to come to Nassau, Dr. Hwang is excellent, he works with Dr. Mehta, the neurosurgeon someone above mentioned. Feel free to Fm if you need any help/support.
