Smithtown.
I don't believe the snow squall theory. Usually there is snow with that! We had no snow and no clouds. My whole house shook. We all think it was a low flyng plane... had to be. People from northport to rocky point all felt it... would sno squall in Npt make Rocky Point shake?
You know, I was actually thinking of the old concord jets as it was happening and how they weren't allowed to fly over residential neighborhoods. I too am wondering where the snow was if it was a snow squall? Did another area get the snow? Maybe someone who knows about weather could explain about the snow squall?

I don't know anything about snow squalls but it was not a plane. My dh and I were both facing a window looking southeast and we both saw the lightning crack through the sky then shortly after we heard it. I am from Florida so it didn't really phase me.

I'm in Bay Shore and I heard it! My first thought was thunder and I was expecting the kids to jump into bed with us but then it didn't sound "right". I guess it was thunder from reading everyones posts.

Re: Did anyone else on the north shore hear that?
Please don't judge or think I'm crazy, but does anyone else think it could have been a meteorite or UFO, and it's being covered up? (Haha I sound crazy!!) But seriously, there was not a cloud in the sky above my house at the time it happened. And it just felt and sounded weird, like nothing I've ever heard before. I had goosebumps for about 20 minutes afterwards. (Again, I'm not a crazy person lol.)

Why would they want to cover that up? The radar showed a snow squall. Some areas received hail, some rain. Haven't heard of snow for anyone, but I'm sure there is a weather reason it comes up as a squall (not a weather junkie).
Sound travels, so even if you were outside of the snow squall area, you still would have heard it and had no snow, rain or hail.

Government cover up of a UFO? Why? Why wouldn't they want to cover it up? Roswell? Area 51? US Govt. has been in the BUSINESS of covering up UFO's.
This is not saying that I think that's what this is..just saying that the government would definitely try to cover up a UFO.

Read an article today that NASA funding has dropped so much that they are losing funding to help monitor asteroids. Maybe it was a close call with an asteroid?
I wish I saw/felt it, I was driving at the time and missed it

Did anyone else on the north shore hear that?
It was a snow squal. I had snow last night. (Northport) I saw the lightning. Heard the boom. House shook for an eternity! Opened the door to see if a plane had exploded and it was snowing.
No cover up. Just Thundersnow.

I'm nowhere near where most of you are reporting from (Hewlett) and I saw the lightning and my house shook a few seconds later. No snow or rain.

Re: Did anyone else on the north shore hear that?
I heard it in Wading River. Shook the windows in my house and freaked me out. I can understand lightening being seen for many miles but how could we all have heard the same intense "boom" at the same time...I believe I am the furthest most person on the east end to post hearing this sound. I saw a post from someone in Hewlett. Hewlett to wading river is approximately 60 miles apart...can anyone logically explain this??? Any meteorologists out there??

Yep does not make any sense. It sounded as loud on the south shore than the north at the same time. Doesnt seem right. When we had thunder snow with the 30 inches, the video that was all over the news from middle island did not sound the same as it did on the south shore.

I agree, I experienced the thunder snow as well and it certainly did not sound like that nor did it sound like any other clap of thunder that I've heard in my 35 years lol.

It was just too long to sound like thunder.

Didn't sound like thunder to me either. I was so scared. It sounded like a plane to me, but not a normal Southwest jet.

It's the same as an isolated t-storm in the summer, except this one had snow. Thunder can be heard many miles ahead of or behind the storm. The cold air at the time likely played a role in the clarity of the thunder. Also, it was a very fast moving storm, thus the reports of thunder at various locations within minutes of each other. The radar at the time did show the squall
