Name change help

I got married years ago, and the marriage license says my maiden name on it. I want to change my name now, to match DH's. I live in NYC.

I literally cannot find the right info on doing this. I just get caught in website after website and have read so much conflicting stuff.

I either want my name to be First Maiden Married or First Middle Married (I don't know if one is faster or easier over the other) - I actually don't care that much. But I would prefer the easiest way to do it, because my work schedule sucks and I am due in like 10 weeks.

A co-worker told me that if you change your name to First Middle Married, it is much easier than changing it to First Maiden Married - no idea if that is true or not because I got married years ago and my marriage license has me keeping my maiden name.

THANKS!!!!!

Name change help

I dont know, but when I got married I paid some money for the website missnowmrs.com. It had GREAT advice and helped me through all the paperwork.

First thing is Social security, then DL, THEN everything else. You need ID for everything else.

Re: Name change help

But are the above answers true if my marriage license shows my maiden name only? Everything I have read indicates that the name change process is easy if you have your married name on the license, but I don't. That is where I keep getting confused.

Thats a great question. I had to use my marraige license to get my new SSN. When we applied for the ML I did put I was changing my name. The ML came with my NEW name. Now I see what you are saying...,...

Its a great question.....

Re: Name change help

LINK to article explaining process

I would start by calling the Clerk of the court, but my understanding of the link below is that you would either
1. Have to appear before a judge and apply for a legal name change (and then change all of your documents with the various agencies); or
2. Get married to your DH again.

See this link for further info.http://www.cityclerk.nyc.gov/html/marriage/amendments.shtml

This is the link for changing your name and not getting remarried

Name change link for outside of NYC.

2. Get married to your DH again.

I remember hearing someone say they had to do this once to change their name bc they didn't take their DH's name on the marriage cert the first time.

Re: Name change help

I just got married in November. Its really simple..

First, I went to DMV, I wanted my ID first. I had to get a new picture with the name change. So fill out the forms first before going, it saves time. Then they will take a picture of you and mail you the new card soon.

Then I went to SS office, and I brought my marriage license. I was in and out of the office within 20 mins. Make sure you go to the ones who handle the name change. Its found on the social security website.

Next, I wrote a letter to the three credit bureaus updating my name. I followed that all my other accounts. Like, my school loan, auto loan and my credit card.
All these agencies will ask for a copy of your marriage license, so make a copy of it.
Also, updated your health insurance as well to your married name.

Name change help

Since on your marriage cert you did not change your name you now have to go to court to legally change it.

You can't just go to SS, DMV etc.

And if you do this, assuming you are an attorney by your username, you also will likely need to change your name with the bar.

Re: Name change help

I have my maiden on my marriage cert and I remember them saying to make sure because it is a process to change your name if you don't put DH's name on it.

You can't just go to the DMV, SS; I'm not sure why everyone keeps saying that.

It sounds easier to just get married again. I would think you need to go to a lawyer to change your name in your situation.

Changing your name with the bar is the easy part though.

They told me to change my name on the marriage cert because otherwise you have to go through a ton of hoops.

I still haven't made it to DMV or Social Security though...............

It's actually not simple at all if your maiden name is on the certificate and (not sure exactly how much) time has passed. I think you will need to petition the court at this point.

Re: Name change help

like the others mentioned, it is a different process if you dont have your married name on your marriage certificate. you need to file a name change petition with the courts. i've never heard of having someone marry you again, but if that is something you can do, i guess that is an alternative but seems like more of a hassle. you cant do the standard SS/DMV unless your marriage license has your married name

This is NOT true. I only have my maiden name on the marriage certificate. I changed my name in NYC 2 years ago. I went to SS with the marriage certificate and had no problems because my DH's name is on the certificate so they know who you are married to. I changed mine to First Middle Maiden Last.

I only had a problem at DMV where they would only let me change the last name, not add my maiden name to my middle name b/c I didn't have the new SS card or passport yet to prove I had done that. I didn't feel like waiting and going back so I went with that.

Start with SS and then do DMV and passport.
