MTHFR and pregnancy
A good friend of mine just experienced her 4th miscarriage. Her dr did a bunch of tests and she tested positive for MTHFR. Has anyone here tested positive for MTHFR and gone on to have a succesful pregnancy? She is really down right now and I was looking for some positive stories to tell her. TIA

Re: MTHFR and pregnancy
This is SOOO common and people move on to have a successful pregnancy with this issue everyday, usually in combination with other issues even. She will need a more absorbable form of folic acid, like metanx, and should also be on baby aspirin. Her doctor will know what to do. Good luck to your friend!

Re: MTHFR and pregnancy
yes I am hetero for MTHFR (less severe) and have had two successful pregnancies. Now that they know, they can treat her and take the proper precautions

Re: MTHFR and pregnancy
Thanks everyone...she is meeting with a specialist in a couple of weeks and hopefully they will formulate a plan. She does have one child already and so she knows she can go on to have a successful pregnancy, but she's still reeling from the 4th miscarriage and was doubting things.

Re: MTHFR and pregnancy
I have the homozygous form of the mutation and had a healthy baby boy in October. I had 2 miscarriages and went through fertility testing and the only thing that came back abnormal was the MTHFR gene mutation for me too. According to my hematologist this mutation is not abnormal and if you test the whole population for the mutation half of them will test positive for it. She also said it had nothing to do with my miscarriages. I'm not sure how much I buy it since so many women who test positive for for this mutation have had miscarriages, most of them more than one. In any case, I have heard multiple success stories of women with this mutation that have had a normal, healthy pregnancy and I am one of them. If your friend wants to chat she can FM me.

This is true although you also should keep in mind that the population who gets tested for these types of issues have had multiple miscarriages. It's not a fair enough sample to draw your conclusion unless you also know of a group of women who were tested without a history of miscarriages.

I have the less severe hetero and I am told that it has no impact on either getting pregnant or keeping the pregnancy.

Re: MTHFR and pregnancy
I am positive for this and had to do one lovenox injection every day for the entire pregnancy. Dr. Kofinas had me go for testing once a month to check my levels.
Now I have

MTHFR and pregnancy
I also have tested positive for this. I have Two mutations of the C677T mutation along with PAI-1. THese are the most severe. I suffered 2 miscarriages. I now have Boy twins & was monitored by Winthrop Perintal. I was not required to take any medication lovenox or otherwise & carried to term 38 weeks. I just took folic acid & baby aspirin
