Guinea Pig cages

I have been getting the puppy bug for the last few months but I know I am not truly ready for the housebreaking and the night time whining so I am thinking of trying out a guinea pig. I have never owned one but I have been doing research and found that first, they are happier with another pig as a companion and second, the cages they sell at pet stores are too small for even 1 pig. Alot of sites talk about those C&C cages you build yourself but wow! they take up ALOT of room! Anyone have any advice. Are the people who make these C&C cages just going overboard?

I have made a few of these. They are very easy to make. There is a place in Farmingdale that sells the really large coragate plastic in lots of different colors (I can find the name and number is you like). I believe I got the cubes at either walmart or target and i used wire ties to hold the cage part together. I did make a top but the guinea pigs don't clim out so we really don't close the top of the cage.

Check out Martins Cages if you decide on a wire cage.. you will get more bang for your buck at martins cages vs store bought. But I have seen some really cool set ups for guinea pigs, the fact that they can't jump makes it much easier to get creative with large low enclosures for them. You just need the square footage.

I have also ordered custom cages from martins cages over the years. If you have the funds, cages by design makes some beautiful cages as well. I have them for my parrots.

Absolutely not! A c and c cage is really the only type. The rest are way too small. Also really you need at least 2. They are herd animals and very social. Otherwise you're stuck w a sad scared alone pig whose full potential will be hard to see.

I know tons about pigs and suggest guinealynx.org forums. These girls are not very welcoming or hat nice but they know their stuff. They will tell you straight up what to do. Many of them spend a lot of time and money rescuing.

I do know of a recent deer park and Brooklyn hoarding situations. Lots of pregnant pigs so there should be some babies that will need to be adopted. Fm me if interested. I can help with anything you need to know!

They are work, but so rewarding.

Re: Guinea Pig cages

Thanks! Yes, I would love the name of the company in Farmingdale. I will also check out that forum.

ETA: Wow! That website has a TON of great info! Thanks again. I want to learn as much as possible before I make a decision about getting one (well, two).
