Twins sharing a placenta with the demise of one twin
I was pregnant with twins that shared a placenta. At 15 weeks one of the twins passed and we have no idea why. There was no evidence of twin to twin transfusion. However, due the fact they shared a placenta, when one died, the other may have suffered severe neurological damage. I am 18 week along now. I have seen about 5 doctors, including one from Yale and 2 from Columbia. The percentages of severe neurological damage ranges from 12 %-30%. The Columbia doctors have convinced us to wait until I am 22 weeks to have an MRI of the babies brain. Does anyone know anyone who had something similar? What did they do? If they carried until term, how was the baby's health? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I never experienced this myself with twins, but have seen cases like this. The end result varies. Wait for the MRI and go from there.

I'm so sorry. I lost my twin at 8 weeks but they had their own sacs. My heart goes out to you. Good luck and I pray for you that everything is good.

Twins sharing a placenta with the demise of one twin
I know someone who went through something similar but I don't know all the specific details. She lost her boy at 20 weeks but her little girl survived. Her little girl is now 8 months old and one of the happiest and cutest babies I have ever seen. She is healthy and active and completely perfect.
I hope that your baby is safe and that you can rest easy for the rest of your pregnancy!

Did they say why they thought the twin might have suffered neurological damage?

Twins sharing a placenta with the demise of one twin
Thank you all for your kind thoughts and prayers. The reason they said the surviving twin could have neurological damage is when both babies were alive they shared blood back and forth with the placenta. There was an even blood pressure balance on both sides. When one twin died, the blood pressure dropped on that side. The blood from the healthy twin rushes out to compensate on the other side. The intial rush of blood out of the healthy twin's brain could cause neulrological damage. Also, because the blood wasn't pumped back to the healthy twin, it took time to return. The loss of blood and oxygen during that time could also cause neurological damage. Now it is a waiting game. April 24 is our prenatal mri at Columbia Hospital in Manhatten. At that time I will be 21 and half weeks along.
