Northport Youth Soccer League
Anybody have a little one playing soccer for them?
I'm kind of peeved. 
This is my daughter's 6th season (3rd year) playing with the league. She's in 1st grade. This season the coach decided to have practice twice a week at 1.5 hours each (5-6:30pm) plus games. (We have two this weekend.)
In the past (including last season, but different coach) it was practice 1x a week for 1 hour.
I think the 2x a week for an 1.5 hours is a bit excessive for 6/7 year olds who aren't even sure they "like" soccer yet.
I think she's too young to be a drop off at this stage which means I stay for the practice with my two sons who are 5 and 2.5.
Anybody else playing for them?
Is this normal for 1st graders in sports????

We live in a different town, but I was shocked at how much more intense soccer was in 1st grade vs. the previous year in K. Honestly, it was less fun for DS (and certainly for me too, since I too have to stick around with my little one) and he is not sure he wants to do it again in the fall.
I guess an indirect consequence of this is that it sort of weeds out kids who are not serious enough about it?
I have heard that come 2nd grade, it gets even worse because some of the kids are also playing travel soccer (I didn't even KNOW there was travel soccer as early as 2nd grade), and the kids are really aggressive and more experienced. I wasn't cut out to be a soccer mom

I hear ya! I'm discovering I'm soooo not a soccer mom either.
The thing is not all the coaches are doing this.
I was talking with a dad, who happens to be a health/gym teacher at a neighboring district and sport nut and his daughter's coach is doing the same thing. He thinks it's crazy as well.
I want my daughter to play, but I think it's absurd since most of us have multiple children and prior commitments (other activites) that we made last season.
I don't know...I'm really turned off by this.

Do you know if you signed her up for pre travel? In our town the ore travel teams require more practice, trainers, games, etc. The intramural teams are not as intense

My DS is in K.
He's starting soccer (Northport Youth) this week. 1 hour practice a week and 2 games this weekend.
The coach seems really nice. He told me flat out, he just wants the boys to have fun and learn the game.

I'm surprised he is even allowed to do this.... is practice still in the pitt for first grade?
DS played one season in K, soccer is not his thing. Practice was once a week in the pitt on the green or yellow fields (I think), with one game a week.

I was a chairperson of the soccer league a few years ago. Unless it's changed, it's one practice during the week & games.
It's excessive.
Tell them you can do one practice & then pick which one you want to. It's a recreational league.
Once they're on Cow Harbor (travel team), they have multiple practices during the week & multiple weekend games.
For the fall, I'd talk to different parents about their coaches & switch teams.
It would be normal if this was football or lacrosse. I've hear they can be nuts. Coaches regularly have the kids play in sleet, rain, etc.

In our league, up to age 9, it's about 1 hour a week, once a week. I coach two teams, so there's no way I could do 1.5 hours 2x a week for two teams! 
My 7-9 year olds, I usually go for an hour and a half, but for the younger kids, they can't focus for that long anyway.

I will say that I think this is quite excessive.. My boys have played every sport under the sun. Although now they only play Lacrosse and Football , where practices are 2 sometimes 3 times a week along with games.. whe they played soccer, up until they were on the travel team, they only practiced once a week.. especially at that young of an age..
To keep the childs attention for that long of a period of time is a feet in itself !!!
I would speak with other parents on the team and if all of you feel the same way someone should definitely say something to the coach !

Different league here and for us 2nd grade has become extreme. It's ridiculous and competitive and I do not like it one bit.

Wow, I'm totally not a soccer mom, but this seems like a lot! Especially for 1st graders. My DD plays soccer for our town, she is also in 1st grade, and it's held ONCE a week, on Sunday in the spring (Saturday in the fall). It's 1 hour - the first 1/2 hour is instruction/practice, the second 1/2 hour is a game versus another team in the league.
Now my older son plays baseball and he has a 2 hour practice during the week and then a 1.5+ hour game every weekend. For some reason, this doesn't seem excessive to me. Maybe this solidifies that I am a baseball mom, not a soccer mom!
Oh, and my 2 sons (almost 9 years old and 1 year old) are dragged with me to my DD's soccer, but I am able to do drop off for baseball practice. MY DD is dragged to all baseball games though!

This coach and his assistant are nuts!!! We went to practice yesterday and he actually times the practice EXACTLY!!! Those girls ran to the very last second!!! They don't leave that field a second before practice is over. (I recall one of our other coaches commenting on this coach during one game and how intense he is about it. LOL )
*surprisingly though, my DD responded very well to his coaching and did awesome. Go figure. *
AND I just received an email that he wants us at the field 30 minutes early to practice before the game. WTF!?!? He must only have one child. or at least doesn't have any other children playing sports on the weekend.

OMG! this guy actually had a big dry erase board for the game and went over plays with these 6 year old girls!
My poor DD played one of her previous coaches that she had for a few soccer seasons and basketball and all she kept asking was could she be on his team. :(

We have the exact same scenario in our league as well. Soccer has become very competitive over the years. I too think it's a bit much at this age but I guess everyone's keeping up "with the Jones". Everything is competitive now. I find that even with dance - everything is by 6 you need to decide - is this your childs "thing". We did dance for "leisure" - by 8 years old my daughter only had 4 / 5 girls in her class because everyone else was in the competition dance. We eventually had to stop that because she felt it was boring because there weren't that many kids in her class. We unfortunately/or fortunately have taken the soccer route. It's become almost a full time job for me. I have two girls in it. One's in the U7 Pre-Travel league - we have practice two times a week for 1 1/2 hours each night and then a game on Sunday (which we need to be there at least 20 minutes before game for warm up). My other daughter U9 Travel is pretty similar except we play all year long - we do indoor league too. I love to watch the girls play BUT I totally understand what you're saying about it being too much. Some nights I'm like REALLY do we have to go. Of course their schedules couldn't be on the same nights - so basically four nights out of the week we are at a soccer field!!! AND both girls are in different leagues so we have a game on Saturday and a game on Sunday.
It only gets worse from here.
