Just Kids-advice
My son went there for 3 yrs through EI and cpse. I know the school and yet I feel only so-so about them. They were good for him but not GREAT ya know?
So now both my daughters were given a program for next year and Just kids seems to be the best option for us due to availability and location, mostly location. I will be driving them. I could bus them somewhere, but I just prefer now to if I am able to drive them .
Mostly schedule wise it works there but I cannot get past this nagging feeling of it only being so so.
Can anyone whose kids went there share their stories? Did you really like it etc?
And if not just kids, any places near Lindenhurst that would have openings for Fall?

My ds went here for one year. I was very disappointed with the program. The teacher did not "get" my child and did not try to individualize the program for him which is what special Ed is all about. He cried every day for the entire year. I also felt that the administration was very unresponsive.
I sent him to a different school this rear and he has flourished. He loves his teacher, started talking and looks forward to school each day.
What about building blocks in commack or the Kramer school in bayshore? These schools have great programs that I liked when we visited. My ds is at the children's center in commack because physically he needs more support and it has been amazing for him. The class is a 12:1:2 but he class was small only 7 kids and his teacher is amazing.

thank you for your honest opinion. I will look into Kramer. Building Blocks is way too far for us.

My son goes there P/T now. He likes going and likes his class, he likes his teacher as do I. He was given a 1 on 1 aide thru his IFSP this past fall. She was wonderful until she gave her two weeks in January. They took 6 WEEKS to replace her, and I think only b/c I started to complain was she replaced finally.
The principal assured me that there was always an extra someone in the classroom for him during the 6 weeks and his teacher was telling me the opposite. There was definitely not an extra person for him. Basically the principal was covering herself since she wasn't following the IFSP. Needless to say I am left with a bad taste in my mouth and he will not be going there in September. I don't know if he would have been going had this not happened but it definitely made up my mind.

As a special ed teacher, in this economy, taking 6 weeks to hire a teacher is absolutely absurd. There are people lining up for jobs. It would leave a bad taste in my mouth as well.

My DD went there. If my DS needed services, I would not send him there.
I had no complaints, but now, I know there is much more out there.
As far as the bus, let them do it. I was weary, but it was part of the overall "school experience" for my DD.

thank you for your honest opinion. I will look into Kramer. Building Blocks is way too far for us.
I brought DD to Kramer for a Social Skills class, I really liked it. Check it out.
Don't rule out Building Blocks because of distance. I know a ton of people who love it.

I was so hesitant about putting DS on the bus, but, if you can find a good school..Do it.
He attended Building Blocks and my DD is at DDI. I have to drive DD because she's not walking and it's easier for me.
So, I recommend:
Building Blocks
DDI
We've been happy at both of these schools.

I know it sounds nuts, but the bus just kills me. noah did it for the 2 full yrs and the school was a mile away and I had such panic every single day, every single day I worried sick about it. I don't know if I can go through that again, yet I know how selfish that sounds.
I am so confused over this. I need help or wish an answer was obvious, b/c I feel like I am doing something 'wrong' which ever way I choose.

 I know how difficult it can be and I wish I knew about the lindenhurst school but based on your "so,so" and others experiences I would make myself get over the panic of bussing and focus on the best school you feel your child will benefit from. It took DS 2 weeks to get comfortable on the bus and he loves getting on now. I was the mom who followed the bust to and from school in the beginning so I know panic :) I know of great feedback with DDI in Huntington which maybe closer to lindenhurst than BB in commack not sure (?) though.

I know!! I just couldn't understand what the issue was. It was like they just didn't 'feel' like interviewing or something!!

Well it is a mess but I am accepting it based on our limitations.
Little Village had openings, but its Nassau and we are in Suffolk and they wont send the packet there. The hours for Kramer are wrong.
I am making peace with Just kids.
I requested they both be in the same class, this is what I want and they were not happy but I don't care.
I will drive them and pick up so I will know the teachers and be able to be involved with them and on top of things at the first signs of trouble.

Not selfish or nuts At all! I get it! I do get nervous everytime the bus pulls away or if he's 5 mins. late coming home. It took me a while to adjust to it and now can say, the bus just makes it easier for *me* and my schedule.
I'm glad you worked it out with Just Kids! If you end up really not liking it, I'm sure you can change schools.
