Question about jogging/running
I recently started jogging as part of my exercise routine. I really want to build up to longer races, possibly even a half marathon. Last fall I walk/jogged a 5K and was happy I finished. Then I stopped training due to Sandy and the holidays etc. After the new year I got back on track. I have been walking consistently without any issues.
So here's my question..Why is it that I can walk for miles up steep hills without any issues but when I jog I tend to lose my breath very quickly and have to stop? I can quickly recover and start jogging again but then have to stop once more. It's not my muscles getting sore or anything like that, I just lose my breath. What am I doing wrong and what can I do to fix it? TIA

If you're getting out of breath, you're probably going too fast (even if you feel like you're running slowly) & your body can't keep up with the oxygen demand. I'd suggest slowing your pace to one you can maintain for a longer time. You can always build up your speed little by little later on. Also try doing short run/walk intervals at first to build your endurance.

For now, run at what you think is a conversational pace. You couldn't necessarily say long sentences but could speak a few words to someone if you were running next to them. Try that. You should be able to maintain a run at that pace for now.

Thanks! Maybe I am going faster than I realize. I will try to slow it down and see how that goes.
