Anyone have a service dog?
well, it's been months and months of research but Dh and I finally decided on a company that we are going to persue an Autism Assistance dog through. Does anyone have one? We've applied to 4pawsforability. It's going to be a long road and will take a ton of fundraising on our part but I know the result will be so, so worth it for our son.

We don't have a service dog but I think they are great. A blog that I follow (he's also on facebook) has one for his son and it seems like a wonderful thing. He's under autism daddy on facebook.

I think for specially trained dogs, most of the time, this is something that funds have to be raised for because it's not something covered by insurance.
I looked into a seizure dog for a former client and I could not find anything for "free".

I have no experience to offer, but if you don't mind would you share what a service would do for your child. I am just amazed by these dogs.

Autism Assistance Dogs are trained in behavior disruption (for children who stim visually and vocally, the dog is trained to see these actions and interrupt the child by either nuzzling them or touching them with their paw essentially drawing attention to the dog to initiate appropriate play instead of the stim activity).
They are also trained to be tethered to the child so that they can walk safely with parents instead of being restrained in a stroller. The tether belt is worn around the child's waist and the dog acts literally as an anchor so that the child will not run or bolt away.
And possibly the most important task the dogs are trained to do is to search, track and rescue a child who has bolted. The dogs are trained to follow their child's scent to find them if they were ever to leave.
Check out the videos on the 4 paws for ability website for a full explanation of what these dogs are trained to do for their companions. It's truly amazing. We're so excited to be starting the process.
