marathons... anyone out there training
since being away i've begun to run.
yes, the girl who would have preferred death than to run a mile in school is now running ON PURPOSE!!
i'm registered for the NJ half on may 5, and then i'll do the atlantic city marathon on october 12.
this is the big goal i've set up for my 40th birthday!
anyone else out there training for long races? what training programs are you following? which race(s) are you gearing up for?

Yay good for you!! Amazing that you have signed up for a marathon already! I am doing two half marathons in May and doing my first full in NYC in November!
I train with Team in Training but I've been running for two years now. There are tons of great plans out there, just stick with one and you'll get there!

Good for you!!! Especially signing up for a full marathon already!!!!
I'm doing my 2nd half in may- LI half. I'm not really training since I've run a half recently. I'm trying to improve time so I've been focusing more on speed. I'm following a combo of Hal Higdon programs, but like I said I don't stick to a strict schedule, since I'm pretty much ready for a half.
My goal is to run a full marathon in the fall. That's my lifelong dream!!!!

i made the decision to run a marathon for my 40th, last summer. i was walking the dog and decided right then and there. the next morning, i started c25k. since then, i've run 3 5ks, 1 5-miler, and 1 10k... yes, i want the t-shirt!
i could have done the NJ marathon in may... my 40th is on memorial day... but i decided i preferred the idea of taking it slow. so i pushed the marathon to the AC marathon... i felt that as long as i ran the marathon before my 41st birthday it would "count."
i'm following jeff galloway's run-walk-run method. this works for a lot of reasons, the main one being that i've never run before and i thought the walk breaks would make it doable... and they have!
i've already run the equivalent of a half and i've kept my time 2 minutes faster than the minimum, so i know i won't be swept.
the BESTEST part of this all... my 18-year-old son (who was on the cross country team at school) has agreed to run it with me as his birthday present to me.
running with that kid has been the most amazing blessing i could have ever dreamed of. he can run circles around me, but always stays right next to me and ALWAYS lets me cross the finish line first... even when we came in dead-last at the 10k. i love that kid!

That's amazing!!!!!! Especially running with your son. I only hope my daughter likes running just as much as I do. It would be awesome to be racing buddies!!! I'm always so curious to see her personality develop and see if she'll be into fitness and running just as much as I'm.
Good luck to you though. Is the ac race a lottery? I need a good full that I can get right into.

AC is not a lottery. seems to be a small enough race to not need it.
once i learned of all that goes into running NYC, i have a feeling i won't be doing that one.
what i like about the idea of AC is that it ends on the boardwalk... nice and FLAT!!

Good For you! I began running last summer. In October I ran a 5K with my son. It was an amazing bonding experience! We are currently signed up for a survival race next month and will do a 10K in October. It's great to have something in common with a 16 year old.

YES!! when we go out on our weekday runs, 99% of the time he's doing all the talking (mostly because i'm huffing and puffing), and he's sharing his life with me.
we have matching t-shirts for all these events and he's been ok with us occasionally wearing the same ones at the same time.
the first 5k we ran together... i cried! i was so happy that he wanted to do this with me. i hope we continue this connection even after he's full grown and out of the house

Re: marathons... anyone out there training
Completing a marathon is a great achievement. It is something not many people have experienced and you will join a very special community.
I will be running my fifth this year (I'm also turning 40), but I'm actually training for a half ironman 2 months earlier and hoping the momentum from that race will be enough to get me through the 26.2 (NYC)
I'm running my 12th li half this year too!
