Anyone ever foster a puppy?

We at some point want want to adopt a puppy...but I'm not 100% ready for the 24/7 long term commitment. Maybe because I haven't had a pet in years, a dog since I was 6, & with 2 kids...being just diaper free would be nice.

I have an opportunity to foster 8wk old puppy (maybe 2) for 2 weeks.

What should I expect?

My oldest said she understands it's to help them grow until they are old enough for a loving family to adopt them. I thought it would be an excellent trial.

Would you do it?

hmmmm....as long as you are prepared to fall deeply in love and want to adopt the puppy then yes do it.... but I know that if I fostered a puppy i would have the hardest time giving him/her to a new family. Especially with two children who's emotions are so fragile.... I say go for it as long as you are prepared to keep him/her if it goes super well.....

Also, consider that you will have to make the puppy/puppies available to show to potential adopters. You may have them for a day or two or a month or two. You never know. We fostered with the intention to adopt twice neither dog worked out for us and then the third time we were just fostering. We ended up adopting her. We had her for 3 months and then one day I got a text that someone was interested in her. My stomach dropped and my heart stopped. I knew I couldn't give her up.

I think it also really depends on the breed of the dogs... Either foster a breed you know you don't want or can't handle because you could give them up easier. Or only foster a breed you could see joining your family if you fall in love. :o)

Re: Anyone ever foster a puppy?

It would be 2 puppies for 2 weeks. Collie/golden retriever mix,

I'm sure there will be tears, but I keep telling the girls it's to get the puppy ready for a family who can give it long time love.

I really don't know what it's like to have a dog 24/7, so I thought it might be a good trial.

They should be pretty sweet puppies. What do you have to lose? Either way, if you fall in love or you do a good deed... you are doing something nice.

Keep in mind though since they are not housebroken... it's going to be A LOT of cleaning. Most people get puppies at 10 weeks old and they are already starting housebreaking. So you are going to be doing double duty. It's not exactly like having one 10 week old puppy you are just starting to housebreak so not exactly the same as knowing what it's like to have a puppy 24/7 that you can take outside for potty. You're going to be cleaning up 10x as much as you would with one 10 week old puppy.

That wouldn't stop me though, I'd still do it... 2 weeks goes by pretty fast.

Re: Anyone ever foster a puppy?

Traysee....that's exactly what we realized. Didn't really realize they are truly like babies at that age. My DH pointed out that we need to wait. With our youngest still potty training, and he works tons....he doesn't want me completely MORE crazed. Cleaning up, sleepless nights, etc.

BUT I'm saving the application for when we are ready!!!!!

We are potty training here, it's total insanity. That would absolutely stop me from taking on two puppies right now.

Having potty trained 2 dogs and one child (at seperate times each of them), training a puppy is exhausting!!! You never know how it will go. My male was trained in a month or so, but my female took a year. At one poiint I was taking her out 12 times a day (since I never used wee wee pads). She had bladder control issues and still sort of does, so I would take her out whenever she rang the bell (I hung a cat toy on my doorknob).

I was just as exhausted training my dogs as I was my child. So I would say wait until your DC is fully potty trained.Chat Icon
