Re: Maps that show the linguistic differences in America
LOL
being a military brat most doesn't apply to me. I say lots of words differently depending on my mood, like pecan and peCAN.
But the Lawyer had me cracking up. My coworker keeps making fun of the way this west Texas hick boy with a REALLY heavy drawl says lawyer.. I keep having to give him dirty looks because the hick has no clue why the word lawyer is so funny.
And Bowie .. I said it like the singer.. but yes I DO know what a bowie knife is and I do say THAT like the revolutionist. Go figure.
and I always will remember the pop vs coke thing. Started to call it "coke" in cali, and kept it up in texas.. drove north one time with the family and was bummed when the waitress said they only had regular and diet for cokes. I said "ah no dr. pepper?" she said of course we got that pop too. I dont want a pop (lollipop) I want a coke, dr. pepper if you have it. Good 5mins of confusion. LOL
and i dont know WHY I call it a round about.. could be just something I heard once, but its ALWAYS been and shall be a roundabout to me but I hear, understand and recognize 'rotary'. No one I know here says 'traffic circle' *shrug*.
and another i dont fit in is the sneaker vs tennis shoes. Sneakers you can run in and are sporty, tennis shoes are for a leisurely stroll, fashion statement and are canvas generally.
Call BS on the sun shower thing too.. we get them a lot and call them what they are.. a sun shower.
cute link tho!

Maps that show the linguistic differences in America
didn't completely agree with me... i've been bi-coastal most of my life.
but it was fun to try to pronounce the words as others do. it felt like a different language, at times

Re: Maps that show the linguistic differences in America
I'm from the Midwest. I agree with most of it. I say crayfish and man-aze. I call soda now but my family calls it pop. My sister confused a waitress here who had no idea what she was talking about when she asked what kind of pop they had.
Another thing - lollipops are suckers there. I trained my kids to say lollipop but when we visit, they say 'sucker'. It's too funny to hear them switch it up for their audience.
