Sachem SD restores full day K for 2013-14
Sachem will receive an increased amount of bullet aid from New York State, and has secured additional grant money, which will help restore full-day kindergarten for the 2013-2014 school year, according to Sachem Superintendent James Nolan.
If the budget vote were to fail on Tuesday, June 18, this would mean an elimination of kindergarten, as well as a number of other cuts as previously laid out by the school district (see below).
“We never gave up on working with and appealing to our local elected officials,” said Mr. Nolan, who mentioned that Senators John Flanagan, Lee Zeldin and Phil Boyle were extremely helpful throughout the process. “People were out there working tirelessly for Sachem and working their best to help us. They assured they had not forgotten about Sachem.”
Sachem will receive around $650,000 in bullet aid. The district has also secured additional federal grants thanks to the hard work of Stephanie MacIntosh, Sachem’s Administrator for Federal Funds. Since full-day kindergarten is restored, there will be fewer staff reductions, fewer unemployment costs and no cost necessary for mid-day busing.
“It was a chain of events that allowed us to put full day kindergarten back in place,” said Bruce Singer, Sachem’s Associate Superintendent for Business.
Sachem’s school board was also quick to notice the diligence of the community and its support for full-day kindergarten.
“Really what helped get this additional aid was the community,” said Sachem Board of Education President Rob Scavo. “The advocacy of parents, calling our legislators, helped get additional aid. Our community speaks very strongly. Without the force and drive from the community, certainly we would not have gotten the attention.”
If the June 18 proposed budget is approved: No reduction in sports program No reduction in music program 50% reduction in all clubs and extra curricular activities Full Day Kindergarten Further reduction of administration and support staff
If the June 18 proposed budget is defeated the following will be eliminated in order to reach a mandated 0% tax increase: Elimination of all sports Elimination of non-mandated music program Elimination of all clubs and extra curricular activities Elimination of kindergarten (Official release of Sachem Central School District)

How could they eliminate kindergarten? It's not a requirement? I don't know of any districts that have no kindergarten

No kindergarten is not state mandated for NY.

It does say that in the press release.
Still... you never know.

I don't see that. If they didn't get this last minute aid things would be different.
There's a lot of info in this newsday article explaining why sachem is in such a bad position. BTW, there are still a lot of jobs being cut.

Nothing like strong arming the voters. Funny how the state magically came up with the money though

Ding ding ding. It's really sickening. I can see why people leave Long Island and NY for that matter in droves.

I don't deny that Sachem as a district is in a lot of hot water, but I do think that the notion of cutting K was a scare tactic.

GO SACHEM!!!
We rallied our asses off for this!! I was up at night making posters, writing emails and getting the word out as we're many of my fellow kindergarten parents. We made a stink and we were heard!!

NYS does not mandate kindergarten and at least 1/4 of their workforce (teachers, clerical staff, etc.) will be eliminated even with the passing of this newly proposed budget.
The old sachem superintendent exhausted reserves in order to not significantly raise taxes. Likewise he over-expanded the schools within the district. Honestly many of those teachers and staff would not have had those jobs if here hadn't been a gross over-expansion.
As usual on LI the community wants low taxes but ALL the programs and do not question how this is being obtained. Also as usual...there is no fiscal responsibility or accountability on the part of the school district.
Unfortunately, the constituents suffer the consequences for both of the above. We want our kids to get the best education available and want our homes in the community to increase in value which is significantly tied to the school district you are in.
I seldom comment on LIF these days but I just had to on this one.
