2nd grade math - help!

How can I get my son up to speed in math before he goes into 3rd grade. He is totally lost with the common core way and won't let me help because "that's not the way the teacher taught him". Any suggestions?

What math series does he use? Some of the series have options for student on-line accounts & you can access the student textbooks & sometimes, practice books.

EngageNY is the State's "go-to" site for common core. That page has links to on-line math activities that help practice common core concepts.

Also, play a lot of counting games.
This will give him a strong base for future years.
Second grade core counting concepts include:
Count by 1's to 1000.
Start at any number less than 1000 & give the next number
Skip count by 5'sto 1000, and by 10s & 100s from any number (like 53) to 1000.
Give 10 more or 10 less than a number (this is first grade core)
Read & write numbers to 1000, using:
-base-10 numerals
-number names
-expanded form

2nd grade math - help!

I would suggest buying a common core aligned 2nd grade math book. You can look up the Common Core Standards on the NYSED Website. Make sure he has manipulatives. If he doesn't let you work with him, you might want to get a tutor for the summer so he is ready for third grade. The NYS 3rd grade assessment was tough this year and it is important to make sure he goes into third grade ready. I am tutoring a student who has the same issue and I gave her a second grade End of Year math assessment to see what her needs are. You might want to ask the school if there is an End of Year assessment that you can have a copy of. Good luck.
